 Intermittent nighttime construction will continue through Fall 2019
Construction, traffic headaches begin in June
The Oregon Department of Transportation will begin two
interstate rehabilitation projects in summer 2018 that will impact Portland area
drivers.
Much of this work will take
place at night, however there will be unavoidable, 24-hour closures for periods
of time in July and August for both projects. Drivers should prepare for
significant traffic congestion and delays and adjust their travel if possible.
I-5 at I-84
Rehabilitation Project
The I-5
at I-84 Rehabilitation Project will replace aging concrete and steel on the
interchange ramps that connect I-84 and I-5. Three of the four connecting ramps
will require closure to all traffic 24-hours a day for up to two weeks each
(only one ramp will close at a time).
Nighttime closures of the ramp connecting I-5 northbound to
I-84 eastbound could begin the week of June 11. Closures will take place from
10 p.m. to 5 a.m. More details will be available in the coming days.
The first multi-day ramp closure, I-5 southbound to I-84
eastbound, is scheduled for the night of July 8.* The ramp will remain closed
until 5:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23. A detour route will be marked, however,
severe congestion will occur and we recommend people avoid the area, walk,
bike or take transit if possible.
I-5 Paving Project
The I-5
Repaving Project will repave both north and southbound lanes, including
exit and entrance ramps, for six miles of I-5 between the Marquam and
Interstate bridges. The project also will replace freeway signage, upgrade ADA
ramps and replace the median barriers at a couple key locations.
Much of the work will take place at night starting the week
of June 11, however, there will be two full weekend closures of I-5 in late July
and early August for the northbound work and two full weekend
closures in mid and late July for the southbound work.
Northbound I-5 will be closed between the Marquam and
Fremont bridges from 10 p.m. Friday, July 27 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 30 and
again from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6.
Southbound I-5 will be closed between the Fremont and
Marquam bridges from 10 p.m. Friday, July 13 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 16 and
again from 10 p.m. Friday, July 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 23.

Expect Traffic Delays
When complete, these construction projects will extend the
life of I-5 and the Banfield interchange for decades to come. However, since
the work zones are located in already-congested sections of interstate, the
impacts to traffic are expected to be severe both on the freeways and adjacent
local streets. With 147,000 vehicles per day, the Banfield interchange is the
busiest in Oregon. I-5 serves as a major commuter and freight route.
To avoid or lessen the expected traffic gridlock, drivers
should consider, if possible:
- Telecommuting
- Adjusting work schedule to avoid peak travel
periods
- Avoiding the area
- Taking transit
- Riding a bike
- Going on vacation

Noise Impacts
During Construction
Night work is required to minimize traffic impacts during
the day. This work includes paving, grinding, median barrier work, ADA sidewalk
curb ramp excavation and construction, and sign work.
