June 2018
Motorcyclists and motorists can work together to save lives. By
gaining a basic understanding of motorcyclists’ riding behavior, motorists can drive
more safely when motorcyclists are on the road with them. Additionally, riders’
awareness and riding skills can improve the chances of having a crash-free
ride.
Motorists making left turns at intersections are one of the most
common causes of motorcycle crashes due to motorists’ difficulty judging the
distance and speed of motorcycles. Remember: even the smallest momentary lapse
in awareness by a motorist or rider can result in injury or death.
Drivers – please follow these safety tips:
- Slow down, assess your
surroundings and thoroughly check for motorcyclists – don’t rush when
crossing intersections, entering the roadway from a parking lot or
driveway, or turning left.
- When turning left, ensure there
is enough time and space for the motorcyclist to clear the roadway before
you initiate the left turn.
- Always double-check your blind
spots when changing lanes or entering the roadway.
Riders – practice defensive driving to ensure great rides this
summer:
- Anticipate that motorists will
not see you and consider what action you can take to avoid a collision if
a vehicle turns in front of you or begins to merge into your lane.
- Use your awareness and riding
skills to control your time, speed, and distance to give you the best
chance to react to surprises from drivers. Remember: the faster you go, the
less time you will have to react to surprises.
- To do anything well takes practice – the worst
time to learn if you can effectively
stop in an emergency
is in an emergency. In a safe area, practice your emergency stops to learn how
to safely control your motorcycle. Being prepared can make a big difference!
