Transportation Safety

Working together to create a safe transportation system

May is Transportation Safety Month

Work zone safety is a top priority for the Oregon Department of Transportation, its industry partners and law enforcement. They engineer, construct and enforce work zones to lower the risk to travelers and workers. Drivers traveling Oregon roads are asked to recognize the importance of slowing down and driving with focus as they approach, enter and travel through work zones. This is for their own safety and that of their passengers, other drivers, construction and utility workers and public safety professionals. More on Work Zone Safety

Avoid distractions in work zones

Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility

As the weather improves, more and more motorcyclists will hit the roads. Oregon is joining with motorcycle organizations and other federal, state and local highway safety and law enforcement organizations to raise awareness about motorcycle safety. Motorcycles are small and may be difficult for other drivers to see, that’s why it’s important to be alert and share the road safely.

During May – and the rest of the year – drivers should safely “share the road” with motorcycles and be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcyclists have responsibilities, too. They should obey traffic rules, be alert to other drivers, never ride while impaired or distracted and always wear a helmet and highly visible gear. It doesn’t matter if you’re on four wheels or two; we all have to do our part to share the road safely.

Click It or Ticket

As we approach summer, ODOT is reminding motorists to Click It or Ticket. Aimed at enforcing safety belt use to help keep you and your family safe, the national safety belt campaign will take place May 15-28, leading up to one of the busiest travel and holiday weekends of the year. Buckling up is such a quick and simple thing – it should be an automatic next step after sitting down in a vehicle. We want to keep Oregonians safe, and make sure people are doing the one thing that can save them in a crash: buckling up. Remember: no matter where you sit in the vehicle, buckle up, every trip, every time.

Buckle up. Every trip. Every time.

Walk+Roll Challenge Month

The Walk+Roll Challenge is a friendly, month-long competition—held annually in May—aimed at encouraging more kids and families to walk, bike and roll to and from school and throughout their neighborhoods. More

Plan Ahead This Cinco de Mayo

You’ve got the limes, salt, tequila, and most importantly, you’ve designated a sober driver. Happy Cinco de Mayo! This Cinco de Mayo, plan ahead and enjoy the party. Impaired driving on Cinco de Mayo threatens not just those enjoying the festivities, but others on the road as well. #BuzzedDriving is drunk driving.

Call a taxi or ride with a designated driver this Cinco de Mayo.
