Salem Railroad Baggage Depot Update: Utility work and more underway

ISSUE NUMBER TEN - AUGUST 2016

Salem RR Baggage Depot

Baggage Depot Utility Work

Construction is underway!

Utility work is visible in the parking lot of Salem's Amtrak Station, but that's not all that's going on. The Statesman Journal noticed the activity and featured a story on the front page in the Aug. 5 edition.

Glass pieces from Baggage Depot

What are these?

We found these bottle-shaped items up high inside the Depot. Without a closer look, one of our Rail and Public Transit Division employee believes "...those objects were used as posts for threaded glass insulators." A website has more details.

What's new

Phase II of construction will begin sometime between Aug. 8 - 11. The south end of the area around the Salem Amtrak Station will be closed, and that will last through October. THIS WILL NOT AFFECT THE PARKING LOT!

We've recently uploaded several new photos of the project on our FlickR site. Get an inside look! (And see some below.) Above, ODOT Historian Chris Bell at the Depot; his work is helping on all fronts, from salvaging materials to interpreting "lost finds."

Stacks of wood inside Baggage Depot

Materials are ready

Stacks of wood are waiting inside the Baggage Depot. Interior work won't begin until later this fall.

Bars at Baggage Depot

Old protection

These bars most likely helped protect valuables - perhaps a cash drawer or boxes with mysterious goods waiting for the owner to claim.
