We love to celebrate the Fourth of July with family, friends, food,
and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on Oregon’s roads.
The fact is, this iconic American holiday is Oregon’s deadliest holiday for impaired
driving crashes.
Eight people have died on Oregon roadways in alcohol-involved
crashes in the last two years over the Fourth of July, and this year - with
legalized marijuana now in the mix - the weekend could see the toll
increased.
This year has law enforcement and prevention professionals
concerned, and for good reason. Legalized marijuana, along with potent and
unpredictable marijuana edibles, oils, and concentrates, is new to the Oregon
marketplace, and the impacts to traffic safety are far from encouraging.
This Fourth of July, law enforcement will be out in full force,
cracking down on drunk or drugged drivers by aggressively targeting those who
put lives in danger.
Remember, it’s not worth the risk to yourself or others to get
behind the wheel. Help make everyone’s holiday safer by planning ahead and
designating a sober driver before the party begins.
Certain model-year 2001-2003 Honda and Acura vehicles show a far
higher risk of ruptures during air bag deployment, prompting an urgent call
from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to ensure that
unrepaired vehicles are found and fixed before they cause
further injuries or fatalities.
The inflators in these particular vehicles contain a manufacturing
defect which greatly increases the potential for dangerous rupture. Testing of
the inflators from these vehicles show rupture rates as high as 50 percent in a
laboratory setting. Learn more in the news release.
