As we work together to stop the spread of COVID-19 at home, work and in the community, we want to make sure you have the resources you need to keep informed, healthy and safe. If you have any questions about OHP and COVID-19, please let us know.

Updates for all health care providers
In response to the complexity of mental health emergencies presenting in the emergency department (ED) and hospital environment, the Western Regional Alliance for Pediatric Emergency Management (WRAP-EM) Mental Health Work Group is happy to announce unique training opportunities provided by David Brent, MD, at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
- The mobile apps and training described below are provided at no-cost in exchange for hospital feedback and recommendations to further refine these interventions for use with acutely suicidal children who present at the ED.
- Hospitals interested in participating in these trainings need to contact Merritt D. Schreiber, Ph.D., WRAP-EM Mental Health Work Group lead, at m.schreiber@ucla.edu by Jan. 15, 2022.
The intervention and app trainings include the following topics. A national leader in prevention and understanding of suicidal behavior in children and adolescents, Dr. Brent and his team will also provide consultation on the implementation of BRITE and ASAP with participating hospitals.
BRITE safety planning and emotional regulation app for adolescents
This opportunity will provide training to non-mental health ED providers (e.g., ED RNs and social workers) in use of the BRITE Safety App for Adolescents. Training length is 1 to 2 hours.
- Safety planning helps patients to resist suicidal urges and can reduce subsequent suicide attempts by 33-50% relative to usual care (Doupnik et al., 2021; Stanley et al., 2018).
- BRITE intervention can be delivered by a non-mental health ED provider in about 30 minutes.
As Safe As Possible (ASAP) intervention
This training covers ASAP, a brief psychotherapeutic crisis intervention for youth at suicidal risk and expected to board in the hospital or ED for three days or more while waiting for psychiatric services. Training length is 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Use of ASAP intervention demonstrated reduction in further suicidal behavior.
- ASAP intervention can be delivered by a mental health professional in the boarding setting, as well as in more traditional psychiatric treatment settings.
Rules Advisory Committee for new rule on Interpreter Services reimbursement
The Oregon Medicaid General Rules (Chapter 410, Division 120) must be updated to conform with House Bill 2359 (2021), which requires health care providers to provide interpretation services to patients using qualified and certified health care interpreters on the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Health Care Interpreter Registry. The draft rule requires Medicaid providers to follow this requirement, and reimburse interpreters for their services.
- To view the draft rule and details on how to participate in this Rules Advisory Committee (RAC), please visit the Health Systems Division RAC page.
- The deadline to request RAC membership is close of business Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022. If sufficient interest is not shown by this date, OHA may delay the RAC to a later date.
Service additions to CAWEM (CWM) benefit package effective Jan. 1, 2022
Effective Jan. 1, 2022, OHA will add the following services the CAWEM (CWM) benefit package. OHA will cover these services in circumstances that constitute an emergency.
- Behavioral health crisis services
- Chemotherapy
- Outpatient dialysis
OHA will file a temporary rule to amend Oregon Administrative Rule 410-120-1210 to reflect this change effective Jan. 1.
You can use OHA's eligibility verification systems to verify services covered under the CAWEM benefit package. Find resources about how to use these systems on OHA's Eligibility Verification page.
