ODFW announces new members to hatchery research center Board

First meeting set for Oct. 17

SALEM, Ore. – The director of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced the appointment of 12 members to the new Oregon Hatchery Research Center Board created by the Oregon Legislature in 2013.

The Board is charged with advising the OHRC Director on operational, budget and research priorities at the research center and includes the following members:

Darus Peake of Nehalem represents the Oregon Salmon Commission
Gary Soderstrom of Clakanie, Columbia River gillnet salmon fishery
Peter Tronquet of Medford, wild fish advocacy
Kyle Smith of Brownsville, wild fish advocacy
Jack Smith of Tillamook, sport fishing 
Lindsay Ball of Pendleton, sport fishing
Les Perkins of Parkdale, agriculture industry
Chuck Pavlik of Waldport, coastal ports
Scott Starkey of North Bend, forest products industry
Jim Lichatowich of Columbia City, independent scientific community
Cam Parry of Charleston, fish habitat restoration interests
Stan van de Wetering of Siletz, Oregon Indian Tribes

In addition, the enabling legislation calls for three non-voting members representing ODFW, Oregon State University and the federal government. They are:

Craig Busack, senior fish biologist, NOAA
Carl Schreck, professor, OSU Fisheries and Wildlife
Bruce McIntosh, assistant administrator, ODFW Fish Division

The board will meet for the first time at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the OHRC, 2418 E. Fall Creek Rd., Alsea, OR 97324. The meeting is open to the public.

The Oregon Hatchery Research Center is cooperative research program between the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State University. Its mission is to understand the mechanisms that may create differences between hatchery and wild salmon and steelhead, develop approaches to best manage any differences in order to meet fishery and conservation objectives, and help Oregonians understand the role and performance of hatcheries in supporting and protecting Oregon's native fish.

The original OHRC Advisory Committee was replaced by the current board structure under House Bill 3441 pass by the Oregon Legislature in 2013. Additional details about the Board’s responsibilities can be found in HB 3441, available on the web here (pdf).
