A note from Katy Coba, State COO
The total solar eclipse on
August 21 will bring an estimated 1 million visitors to Oregon, presenting our
communities with both opportunities and challenges. While state government will
remain open for business, the large number of visitors will undoubtedly have an
impact on our operations, most notably, congested roads.
State agency directors are in
charge of managing their agency’s operations in a way that makes sense to them,
and will work with their staff on options to reduce the number of state workers
on Oregon roads.
The
Oregon Office of Emergency Management continues to work with state agencies and
local communities to respond to any major issues that may arise with the large
influx of visitors to our state. Wherever you plan to be during the eclipse,
use the eclipse-related resources at right to help you prepare.

State government gained a valuable resource last month when DAS welcomed Dave Wortman as Oregon’s Statewide Sustainability Officer.
Dave holds a degree in Natural Resource Economics from Cornell University (New York), a Master of Science degree in Environmental Planning from the University of Washington, and an advanced degree in sustainability from Macquarie University in Australia.
With many state employees passionate about sustainability, Dave is enjoying visiting with a wide range of individuals and agencies both inside and outside state government to listen and learn. Among other initiatives, Dave plans to establish focus groups and online discussions so agencies can submit ideas and learn from each other. “Lots of good things are happening,” notes Dave, “and the support of DAS leadership and Governor Brown will make further progress possible.”
You can reach Dave at 971-304-8733 or David.Wortman@oregon.gov.

DAS has entered a partnership
with IBM to implement “Workday,” an industry-leading Human
Resource Information System (HRIS) for Oregon state government.
Workday will replace two aging systems: the Position
and Personnel Data Base (PPDB) and the Position Inventory Control System
(PICS). In addition, Workday will provide self-service portals for employees
and managers to take a more active role in managing individual employee
records. Workday will be tightly integrated with state government’s existing
learning management system (Meridian) and replace the current recruitment
management system (NEOGOV).
Click graphic for a larger view of all Workday offers.
The new system will
provide valuable reporting options, increased efficiency, improved risk
management, and enough flexibility for the system to remain relevant. Access to Workday will be available through employees’ computer and mobile devices
(smart phones and tablets).
Planning, architecture and design phases of the project will occur throughout fall and winter, testing will occur in spring 2018, and launch will follow. For
more information, visit the HRIS (Workday) Project website or email
CHRO.HRIS@oregon.gov.
