Beverage Container Redemption Center proposed in Salem

Salem, Ore. – The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has received an application for a Beverage Container Redemption Center in Salem from the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative.

The proposed site is located at 4815 Commercial St. SE, Salem, OR. If approved, the redemption center could open early 2012.

If approved, beverage containers will no longer be accepted at the following Zone 1 stores, but could be returned to the Commercial St. Redemption Center and a limited amount could be returned to the stores in Zone 2.

Roth’s #11, 4555 Liberty St., Salem 

Safeway #1935, 5660 Commercial St. SE, Salem 

WalMart #1920, 5250 Commercial St., Salem 

Winco Foods #20, 4575 Commercial St., Salem 

 

If approved, the following stores within Zone 2 may limit beverage containers to 24 containers per day. Containers could be returned to the Commercial St. Redemption Center. 

Costco #68, 1010 Hawthorne Ave. SE, Salem 

Roth’s #8, 3045 S. Commerical St., Salem 

 

The redemption center proposes to accept all types/brands of containers accepted under the Oregon Bottle Bill. The OLCC will approve a redemption center if it will provide a convenient service to consumers for the return of empty beverage containers.

 

The applicant proposes to be open seven days per week from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm in the summer, and from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm during the rest of the year. The proposal includes a 24-hour drop box for account holders. The center proposes to accept up to 300 containers per person per day. Special arrangements may be made to accept large quantities from fundraiser and donation accounts.

A public comment period is currently open through 5:00 pm Monday, November 14. This is an opportunity for the public to provide the commission feedback on the proposal.
