LTC Guidance New COVID-19 Variant

April 7, 2021

Testing for Possible Variant COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2)

There are new strains or variants of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19 illness) spreading in the world and the U.S. These new variants may spread more easily from person-to-person. The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) Public Health Laboratory (PHL) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can test for the new strains when appropriate. Vaccine breakthrough cases are of interest for variant testing due to the possibility of reduced vaccine efficacy against variant strains.

Read more regarding notification and specimen submission for vaccine breakthrough cases.
