NBC Stipend Bill Advances
National Board Certified teachers, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists would receive $5,000 stipends for the upcoming fiscal year and the next 10 years under Senate Bill 1879. The Oklahoma House of Representatives Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Education voted 10-1 Monday, April 2, 2012, to pass the bill. Rep. Ann Coody, R-Lawton, the House author of the bill, said the bill keeps a promise to educators.
SB 1879 would require the state to pay the stipends to educators already certified for the number of years remaining on the 10-year National Board Certification.
District Empowerment Bill Stymied
The School District Empowerment Program, Senate Bill 1530, failed by a vote of 4-8 in the Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Monday. The bill would have given school districts the same relief from regulations that charter schools enjoy.

Virtual Commission Gets Approval
Senate Bill 1816, which would create a State Virtual School Sponsoring Commission passed by a vote of 10-1 in the Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Monday. The commission would provide oversight of approved virtual education providers and report by November 1 each year to the governor, president pro tempore of the Senate and speaker of the House of Representatives the performance of students enrolled with the providers, enrollment numbers and expenditures.
