Oklahoma Autism Network: Creating Inclusive Communities for Individuals with Autism

We flourish most in the midst of community. Yet too many workplaces, schools, congregations, and neighborhoods still struggle to become places of belonging for people with autism and other developmental disabilities. In this presentation and discussion, Dr. Carter will share a powerful framework for reflecting upon and fostering belonging within the different communities that matter most to the people we serve. Together, we will explore the implications for this work on the ways we support people with disabilities, on the ways we invite communities to be more welcoming, and on the implications of the pandemic on this work.

Objectives: Through this webinar, participants will be able to

  • Describe the evolution from exclusion to segregation to integration to inclusion for people with developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Address the need to push beyond inclusion toward a destination of belonging
  • Review key dimensions of belonging identified as important by individuals with disabilities and their families
  • Address how advancing belonging can impact the flourishing of individuals with disabilities and of communities
  • Identify practical ways in which they can promote belonging among the individuals and communities they serve
  • Discuss how belonging can be fostered in the midst of this pandemic
