IEP Goals and the Oklahoma Academic Standards

IEP goals must address a student’s individualized educational needs that result from the student’s disability. Measurable goals are a required component of an effective and compliant IEP. Each goal should meet the following criteria:

  • Specific – What is the team helping the individual student accomplish?
  • Measurable – How will the team know when the student achieves the goal?
  • Attainable – Is the goal practical for the student?
  • Relevant – Does the goal address the needs (academic, social, behavioral, etc.) of the student?
  • Timebound – What is the timeframe in which this goal will be achieved with the student?

The Oklahoma Academic Standards (OAS) serve as expectations for what all students should know and be able to do by the end of a specific school year. IEP teams should be familiar with the OAS and endeavor to align academic IEP goals to the standards; however, the standards as written do not meet the requirements of individualized goals.  IEP teams are encouraged to utilize OAS as grade-level guides while customizing individual student goals to address the student’s disability-related needs.

The OAS were initially added to EDPlan to assist IEP teams with grade-level academic expectations; however, the standards will be no longer be in EDPlan in the goal drop-down as of July 31st. IEP teams may continue to refer to OAS standards here as a framework on which to build individualized academic goals.

For more information on developing individualized IEP goals, please watch the following training: IEP Goals and Progress Monitoring
