Significant Disproportionality

OSDE-SES is releasing significant disproportionality findings twice this year, to provide districts time to address problems with identification and settings prior to the Oct. 1 child count this coming fall. (Discipline findings will be released in September.) Letters with identification and settings findings will be sent this week. If you do not receive your emailed letter by Friday, please contact Ginger Elliott-Teague. Thirteen districts have been found significantly disproportionate and another 35 are at risk for significance in the coming year. We will hold webinars soon to assist districts with addressing those concerns and any federal and state requirements due to the findings. You will receive the webinar notice via email.

Sooner SUCCESS

Sooner SUCCESS, a program of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in partnership with Oklahoma Aging Services are planning to host a Virtual On the Road Family Perspective Conference, entitled Supporting Family Caregivers Across the Lifespan: children with special health care needs, adults with disabilities and older adults. The virtual event will be held via Zoom Webinar on May 14, 2020. This On the Road will focus on sharing information across the lifespan, so caregivers who have a child with special health care needs, or caregivers caring for an adult with a disability or an older adult. Valuable information from professionals who work with caregivers.
This webinar is a two-session event with the first session for children birth to 16 years old from 10am to noon and the second session for all ages and older adults from 2pm to 4pm. Caregivers can attend the webinar sessions to learn about what statewide resources, organizations, and supports they might be able to access for their loved one who has a disability or special health care needs. Caregivers may attend one or both sessions.
Conference attendees will be able to receive contact information and helpful statewide resources. With this information it makes it a little easier for the family caregivers to navigate the system to find the supports or resources that meet their family’s needs.

There is no cost to attend the webinar but registration is required. Limited registration spots are available.

Leverage the Power of Community

We invite you to join the Special Education Distance Learning Community, a place to come together to trade stories, ask questions, and connect through shared experiences. Margaret Wheatley wrote, “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.”

This community of educators is also an outlet for sharing and acquiring adapted lessons and materials. By creating a depository of ideas, together, we can do more. The sharing form can be accessed at the Distance Learning Community Sharing Form (click here). Distance Learning Community Spreadsheet (Material Access)

We have been given a chance to see our students in a new light, and better connect with families knowing that the school year will not unfold as planned, all curricular goals will not be met, and expectations will be viewed with a new perspective. Our next Distance Learning Community connection will focus on early childhood.
