PLEASE VOTE: Proposed Changes to Significant Disproportionality

The purpose of this survey is to collect additional stakeholder input on proposed changes to the definition of significant disproportionality in special education in Oklahoma. The proposed changes affect two components of the definition. Please open the survey link to read more about the changes and vote your preferences. We will be accepting responses until February 24, 2020.

Significant Disproportionality Survey

These changes have been proposed to support district improvement prior to being identified as significantly disproportionate, which requires a mandatory 15 percent set-aside of federal funds under IDEA. This plan will enable the OSDE-SES to identify at-risk districts and provide support before the set-aside is required. OSDE-SES has found that many changes can be made at low cost, and expects that improvements will be made before disproportionality becomes significantly problematic (thus avoiding set-aside altogether). Early intervention will help to ensure that all students receive equitable discipline, placement and identification in their districts.

UPDATE: Final SSIP Stakeholder Meeting

The final SSIP stakeholder meeting to be held in Duncan has been cancelled due to a lack of interest. Please contact Ginger Elliott-Teague if you have questions or would like more information about the process or proposed changes.

Charting the Life Course Conference

Charting the Life Course is a framework that was developed to help individuals with disabilities and families at any age or stage of life think about what they need to know, identify how to find or develop supports, and discover what it takes to live the lives they want to live. Individuals and families may focus on their current situation and stage of life but may also find it helpful to look ahead to start thinking about what they can do or learn now that will help build an inclusive productive life in the future. Workshop 2

Workshop #2 Dyslexia – Screening and Assessment

When a child is struggling to read, someone will probably suggest that he or she be tested for dyslexia. What does it mean to be tested? You might think that of a test as something you take in an afternoon. Someone scores it and tells you how you did. Evaluation is a more accurate word to describe the process of determining if someone has dyslexia. The word evaluation encompasses identification, screening, testing, diagnosis, and all the other information gathering involved when the student, his or her family, and a team of professionals work together to determine why the student is having difficulty and what can be done to help. (International Dyslexia Association).

This workshop will be geared for school psychometrists, school psychologists, district administrators, and special education directors.
