This webinar series will provide opportunities throughout the school year for new special education directors and other district program staff to receive information on important topics to help new directors understand the federal and state content of various requirements under the IDEA.
TAESE will provide a federal perspective, discuss the connection between the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and the state, while the OSDE will provide a state perspective, and discuss the connection between the state and school districts.
This event will be held February 18th, 2020 from 3:00pm - 4:30pm

EDPlan Functional Behavior Assessment/Behavior Intervention Plan (FBA/BIP)
The EdPlan FBA/BIP workflow is designed to walk users through conducting a functional behavior assessment and writing a behavior intervention plan. This allows district personnel to support students with the most challenging behaviors using a workflow which includes four fluid phases: FBA, BIP, progress monitoring, and progress review.

EDPlan FBA/BIP Module Release
The EDPlan FBA/BIP module is now accessible to district personnel. A Quick Reference Guide has been developed as a resource and for ease of use. The Quick Reference Guide can be found in the documents section on EDPlan under the tab labeled ‘Special Education’. OSDESES staff is available for support and guidance throughout this implementation process.

In-person regional trainings are being held throughout February into early March. For those unable to attend an in-person training, a webinar is scheduled for March 10th.

The next Non-Traditional to Special Education Certification program "Boot Camp" is scheduled for April 18th - June 20th, 2020. The application acceptance window opens March 1st - March 20th, 2020. Boot Camp does fill quickly.
This process is designed for candidates who meet the following criteria:
- Have earned a four-year degree from an Institution of Higher Education holding Regional Accreditation
- Have a Grade Point Average og 2.75 or higher from a previous degree program
- Have a recommendation from a representative at a school district or Institution of Higher Education
- Pass a National Background Check
- Commit to complete a Master’s Degree or Certification in Special Education
Candidates who meet the above criteria and are interested in obtaining a non-traditional special education certification may submit an application to the State Department of Education, Special Education Services. Candidates must then complete a 150-hour program that includes 120 hours of special education known as "Boot Camp" plus 30 hours of field experience. The program is a fast-paced, intensive 9 week course, with a minimum of 8-10 hours weekly plus five Saturday classes.

Charting the Life Course is a framework that was developed to help individuals with disabilities and families at any age or stage of life think about what they need to know, identify how to find or develop supports, and discover what it takes to live the lives they want to live. Individuals and families may focus on their current situation and stage of life but may also find it helpful to look ahead to start thinking about what they can do or learn now that will help build an inclusive productive life in the future. Participants will leave the workshop with tools to make appropriate plans for each child for the future.

At this time, Public Consulting Group (PCG) is not importing parent files into OK EDPlan because many Student Information Systems (SIS) vendors are not sending parent addresses to the WAVE. Parent files with no addresses causes the address in EDPlan to be cleared, which is burdensome for the end user. Until approximately 2 weeks ago, when a child transferred school districts the parent information transferred with them. Parent information is no longer being transferred as a part of the child’s records. It is advisable to double check parent contact information for any student who was previously served in your district, moved, and recently returned to ensure that old parent contact information is updated as appropriate.

Secondary transition services must be in effect prior to the beginning of students’ ninth grade year or upon turning 16 years of age, whichever comes first, or younger, if determined appropriate by the IEP team. Oklahoma is moving forward with “rebooting” its State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP), a multi-year plan to build infrastructure and increase the implementation of evidence-based practices with the purpose of improving student outcomes. The SSIP is federally-mandated for all states and territories, and Oklahoma must have a new one in place by December 2020. The first step in this process is gathering stakeholder input into the selection of the “State-identified Measurable Result,” the specific outcome we will target for improvement.
OSDE-SES will hold meetings in three regions in the next few weeks to meet with district personnel, parents and interested family members, and community advocates. In each location, we will have an afternoon (2:00-4:30pm) and an evening (5:30-8:00pm) meeting. Please plan to attend one of these, if you are available. We will also host a webinar for those who cannot participate in person.

The featured keynote speaker is Dr. David P. Hurford, a psychologist and scientist who specializes in dyslexia/reading difficulties and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He is a professor and chair of the Department of Psychology and Counseling at Pittsburg State University and directs the Center for Research, Evaluation and Awareness of Dyslexia (Center for READing) at the same institution.
Registration for all events will be from 8:00-8:30am, lunch will be on your own. Sessions will conclude at 4:00pm.
Workshop #1 The Science of Reading
The Oklahoma State Department of Education-Special Education Services Division will be hosting regional dyslexia workshops for general and special education teachers, district administrators, and special education directors, in the science of reading, targeting identification and interventions for students with dyslexia. This workshop is similar in content to the OK Regional Dyslexia Workshops in October 2019.

Workshop #2 Dyslexia – Screening and Assessment
When a child is struggling to read, someone will probably suggest that he or she be tested for dyslexia. What does it mean to be tested? You might think that of a test as something you take in an afternoon. Someone scores it and tells you how you did. Evaluation is a more accurate word to describe the process of determining if someone has dyslexia. The word evaluation encompasses identification, screening, testing, diagnosis, and all the other information gathering involved when the student, his or her family, and a team of professionals work together to determine why the student is having difficulty and what can be done to help. (International Dyslexia Association).
This workshop will be geared for school psychometrists, school psychologists, district administrators, and special education directors.
