UCO Dance & Theatre Days

UCO Dance Shadow Day – October 3, 2018

The University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Fine Arts and Design is offering a FREE Dance Shadow Day to High School juniors and seniors! Students will spend a day in the life of a UCO Dance Major by participating in University classes, touring the campus, meeting faculty and current students and more! 9 am – 5 pm, lunch provided. UCO Musical Theatre Shadow Day – October 5, 2018

Participate in an exclusive audition workshop, tour the University of Central Oklahoma campus and meet the faculty and musical theatre students. All participants should be prepared to audition individually as well as participate in a group dance call during this event. A complimentary dinner and tickets to the performance of The Most Happy Fella round out the day. FREE to high school juniors/seniors and transfers; parents and teachers also welcome. 9 am – 7:30 pm. UCO Dance Master Class – October  6, 2018

The College of Fine Arts and Design’s Department of Dance presents Melissa Brading Master Class from 10 am – 11:30 am on the University of Central Oklahoma campus. $15 online advance- purchase tickets or $20 cash/check at the door. Visit the event website or call 405.974.3784 for more information.

UCO Theatre Arts Drama Day – November 3, 2018

The Theatre Arts department of the College of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Central Oklahoma invites all High School students and Transfers to attend FREE Central Theatre workshops, a UCO campus tour, meet faculty and students and enjoy a complimentary dinner and performance of Macbeth. Parents and teachers are welcome to attend. A special track for parents include Q/A for admissions/enrollment, housing, and financial aid. High School Seniors and Transfer students can audition/interview for College and Department scholarships and tuition waivers. 12 noon–10 pm. "Speak Out For Art" OAEA Fall Conference

The 2018 Oklahoma Art Education Association Fall Conference Speak Out for Art! will be at Oklahoma Christian University on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13.  There will be sessions geared toward new and emergency certified teachers!  You may register on-site on the day of the conference (late registration fee applies). OAEA accepts cash, check, purchase order, or credit cards for on-site registration.  Please visit the OAEA website for more information.  


OkMEA Fall Conference

On Thursday, October 18, the Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OkMEA) will host their annual Fall Conference at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music on the Oklahoma City University campus. The conference opens with a general session featuring guest performers Voce Spiritus (Central Oklahoma Symphonic Youth Chorus Program) under the direction of Dr. Darla Eshelman. The two blocks of sessions offer clinics for band, choral, elementary, and orchestra teachers. Band directors can learn how to prepare for the OSSAA sight-reading room and dialogue with seasoned educators during a panel discussion. Choral directors will be exploring technology and music theater in their sessions. Elementary teachers will move while experiencing active listening strategies for the early childhood classroom and will sing through the Circle the State with Song repertoire for this year. Orchestra directors will gain techniques for preparing for contest and play through new music from Penders. Collegiate OkMEA members will choose their own sessions to attend in the morning and will have a meeting/lunch in the Great Hall at noon. Come not only for the professional development but also for the refreshing experience of networking with your colleagues! We hope to see you there.

2018 Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest

Oklahoma A+ Schools at UCO  is pleased to present the 2018 Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest. This program encourages high school students to learn about poetry by memorizing and then reciting a poem selected from the National Poetry Out Loud catalog.  Winners from school contests will advance to the state finals at UCO on March 7, 2019. Carnegie Hall Link Up 

Students in grades 3–5 are given the opportunity to join the orchestra in this highly participatory program, learning to sing and play an instrument in their school classroom and then performing with Tulsa Symphony from their seats at a culminating concert in one of five Tulsa venues. During the 2018–2019 season, more than 20,000 Tulsa-area students and teachers from 13 districts will explore how composers create musical movement using motifs and melodic direction through Link Up “The Orchestra Moves.”

Symphony by the Sea

Symphony by the Sea for Students is a unique field trip opportunity combining arts and science education through a partnership of the Oklahoma Aquarium and the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra. Students travel to three stations in the Aquarium to learn about a particular animal or habitat and a selected musical ensemble.  Schools can register through the TSO website to attend March 6, 7, or 8.

TSO to Go 

TSO partners with AHHA and Artists in the Schools to provide a variety programming throughout Tulsa and the surrounding communities. Additional collaborations with the Rosa Parks Early Childhood Education Center, Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, and the Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance, provide school programs with TSO's Education Ensembles.  


Oklahoma Thespian Festival

Registration is open for the OK Thespian Festival that will take place at Tulsa Community College February 1-2 2019. Please check out our website to charter a Thespian Troupe so that your students can get all of the benefits that OK Thespians offer. Scholarships, workshops, college auditions, competitions, showcases, OK Playworks, and qualify to compete at the International Thespian Festival - all in one weekend!

OK Drama Education Network

Drama and theatre educators!  There has been an effort by educators across the state and the faculty at SWOSU to improve communication within the drama/theatre community.  If you'd like to be a part of it, check out the Oklahoma Drama Education Network facebook page.  Also, SWOSU will be offering their Oklahoma Drama Convention (OKDramaCon) again next summer.  More information will be shared in the future!  


OAEA Statewide Portfolio Day

Choosing a college or university can be one of the most important decisions made by a student during their senior year of high school. The OAEA and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art are proud to host Portfolio Day, a gathering of colleges and universities across the United States who wish to showcase their visual arts programs, and will meet students to review their portfolios on a one-on-one basis. A comprehensive list of the attending institutions will be available in January. 

The OKC MOA will provide for the costs this presents to your school system including bus, driver, sub, etc. This is a completely free event with no charge to the participants.

To attend Portfolio Day, high school teachers must email Jann Jeffery to request an appointment time. For more information, please refer to the Portfolio Day website.

The OKC Museum of Art will offer free tours of the current exhibitions to Portfolio Day attendees.


OAAE Bookmark Contest

The time has come for the 3rd annual Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education Bookmark contest.

This year’s theme:  How have the arts impacted the world around you?

The contest is open to students in grades K-12 who attend school in the state of Oklahoma.  Two winners will be chosen from each division: Kindergarten - 5th Grade , 6th - 8th grade , 9th - 12th Grade

Entries are due by October 5, 2018

Two-thousand of each winning bookmark design will be reproduced and distributed throughout the state of Oklahoma, as well as to the Governor, Lt. Governor, and each member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives and Senate!


Title IV, Part A - Guidance

The Office of Federal Programs has released Title IV, Part A Guidance. Download the guidance here.  Further guidance pertaining to fine arts will be released later this fall to help fine arts educators advocate for their programs.  In the meantime, NAfME has some information available concerning Title IV, Part A.
