Important Update About Medical Marijuana Recommendations

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, a new state law, SB 1066 (2025), requires physicians to complete additional medical marijuana education and register with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) before providing medical marijuana recommendations to OMMA patients and applicants.

If a physician is not registered with OMMA by Jan. 1, they will no longer be able to legally recommend medical marijuana. Starting Jan. 1, patient applications submitted with an unregistered physician's signature will be rejected. Recommendations issued up to Dec. 31, 2025, will be considered valid for the full 30-day period.

To help patients, OMMA will be publishing a Voluntary Registered Physicians List on the Physicians webpage beginning Jan. 1. If a physician does not appear on the list, patients are encouraged to confirm the physician’s OMMA registration status directly with the physician.

What This Means for Your Physician

Under state law, a physician is qualified to sign a physician recommendation form only when all the following requirements are met:

  • The physician is in good standing with the State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision, the State Board of Osteopathic Examiners or the State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners.
  • The physician adheres to accepted standards a reasonable and prudent physician would follow when recommending any medication to a patient.
  • The physician is not located at the same physical address of a dispensary (including virtual appointments with patients who are at a dispensary).
  • The physician is registered with OMMA beginning Jan. 1, 2026, and has completed and submitted medical marijuana education requirements for recommending physicians.
