Committee approves preliminary plan for interior restoration of Capitol
Next step is working with contractor on detailed scope of work
OKLAHOMA CITY — The State Capitol Repair Expenditure Oversight Committee
on Thursday approved a preliminary plan for restoration of the interior of the
97-year-old State Capitol building.
The preliminary plan includes goals for the project and
criteria that will be used to select a contractor to complete the work.
Approval of the preliminary plan was the committee’s first responsibility
under House Joint Resolution 1033, which was approved by the Legislature and
Gov. Mary Fallin earlier this year. The measure provides $120 million to begin
restoring the Capitol and charges the nine-member, bipartisan committee with
overseeing the planning process for restoration of the Capitol interior.
“A project of this magnitude will require dedication,
ingenuity and long-term commitment from all the stakeholders at the Capitol and
beyond,” said Stephen Mason, an Oklahoma City engineer who is chairman of the
commission. “Projects of this nature are rarely easy or without inconvenience.
Nevertheless, we are certain that the end result is worth all that must be
endured to get there. A fully restored Capitol will be a better, more efficient
building to conduct the affairs of the state and a source of pride for all
Oklahomans.”
A contract for the interior restoration will be awarded in
February through the state’s competitive bidding process. Once selected, the
contractor will begin working with the committee to develop a scope of work for
the project based on the goals contained in the report the committee approved
Thursday. The scope of work will include specific plans such as future space
usage, project phasing and cost estimates for the various components of the
project.
Exterior restoration should begin in spring of 2015, while
interior restoration should begin in 2016. A competitively bid contract for the
exterior restoration will be awarded Dec. 22.
