Success Story: DHS in 20x2020

A number of organizations are doing well in both components of 20x2020 - utility data entry into EnergyCAP and establishing a behavioral program in coordination with ES2. The 20x2020 team will regularly highlight an organization that can serve as model of success. Your organization could be next!

Since the launch of 20x2020 this past January, the Department of Human Services was one of the first in line to participate and has been a major partner with ES2 and the State Energy Program Office. From the first meeting, DHS united a team of relevant stakeholders from numerous internal departments, allowing everyone to get accurate information and make immediate decisions. While DHS is a large, complex agency that spends more than $3 million on utilities annually, it has effectively paved the way to launching its own 20x2020 program.

By embracing a team approach, DHS has ensured that all tasks are completed on schedule and without neglecting any employee’s previous responsibilities. Debbie Holt, administrator of the Property Management Unit, oversees DHS’s 20x2020 program. Cathy Downey CPO, budget analyst III, uses her experience with the agency’s facilities and lease agreements to oversee the EnergyCAP process.

Holt also works with 5 property managers across the state that complete the energy manager duties in their regional portfolios in consultation with DHS’s expert facilities management professionals. When asked about the source of their success, Holt said, “We have enlisted motivated employees that accepted the challenge and are driven toward accomplishment.”

Even when faced with unexpected challenges, DHS staff continued to place a priority on moving forward.

When asked to input all historical data into EnergyCap for 300+ meters by Oct. 1, DHS kept its progress on schedule by hiring and training a selection of temporary employees to assist in the effort. Currently, Downey estimates that DHS may have its historical data entry completed by the end of this week.

In addition to the utility data entry, the entire DHS 20x2020 team attended ES2’s Behavioral Program Implementation Seminar in July.  Since training, they have met with their internal communications staff to begin developing DHS-specific outreach materials, and are planning for DHS property managers to communicate face-to-face with every employee via a series of group meetings across the state.

When asked for advice they could provide to other organizations, Holt and Downey both emphasized “communication” and encouraging peers to proactively seek out guidance. Indeed, DHS has proven that even the largest of organizations can set up a well-organized team, seek help when needed, and simultaneously meet the deadlines for both the submission of EnergyCAP data and implementing a 20x2020 behavioral program.

Energy Saving Tip

Each individual has the opportunity to contribute to our goal of reducing energy consumption 20% by proactively finding small ways to help.

This week's tip:

Taking the stairs instead of the elevator isn't just for your health.

A typical hydraulic elevator in just a three story building uses as much energy in a year as a normal household does in four months, and a ten story building can use up to five and a half times as much energy.  Try taking the stairs if you are able-bodied and only traveling up or down less than three stories, and look for others behind you when boarding an elevator to reduce unnecessary trips. It is indeed also great for your health!

If you have any questions or ideas on tips to share, please contact Morgan Miller of ES2 at mmiller@es2ok.com or (405) 528-4500.
