Two Fatal Scooter Related Crashes Reported in Last 24 Hours
The Oklahoma City Police Department is asking both scooter riders and motorists to exercise heightened caution following two fatal incidents within the last 24 hours involving citizens operating electric scooters.
These tragedies occurred in areas that do not typically experience high levels of pedestrian or scooter activity, underscoring the need for all road users to remain alert and aware of one another. As electric scooters become increasingly common on Oklahoma City streets, the consequences of a collision with these vulnerable road users can be catastrophic.
“We want to remind everyone that visibility is one of the most critical factors in preventing collisions,” said Police Captain Benjamin Weir. “Scooter riders should wear highly visible or reflective clothing and remain especially mindful when traveling through areas where drivers may not expect to see them.”
The Oklahoma City Police Department is also asking motorists to do their part in keeping the roads safe for all users. Drivers are reminded to:
- Observe posted speed limits.
- Remove all distractions while driving.
- Never operate a vehicle while impaired by any substance.
- Be vigilant for scooter riders, especially in areas where their presence is increasing.
Scooter riders are encouraged to:
- Wear bright or reflective clothing.
- Use functioning lights when available.
- Avoid low-visibility areas or roads with high vehicle speeds.
- Follow all traffic laws and remain alert to surroundings.
