Date & Time: 03/01/2023 at 4:47 p.m.
Location: 3700 S. Council Rd.
Victim: Smith, Douglas (W/M – 08/13/1953)
Suspect (Deceased): Name withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
Narrative: Yesterday afternoon, just before 5:00, Oklahoma City Officers responded to reports of gunfire at a business in the 3700 block of S. Council Rd. Responding officers were given information indicating there was an active shooter in the building. Officers arrived at the business and learned this was not an active shooter but an isolated incident which involved two employees. The suspect had a work-related argument with his supervisor 69-year-old Douglas Smith. It appears the suspect walked out to the parking lot and retrieved a firearm from his vehicle. He returned inside the business and shot Smith. Smith was pronounced deceased on scene.
Investigators quickly received a description of the vehicle the suspect fled in, and he was found later in the evening at a gas station around I-35 and Highway 51. He fled from police and initiated a pursuit. Oklahoma City Police Air Support Unit arrived in the area and was able to monitor the suspect from the air, at which time Oklahoma City Officers on the ground stopped following. The suspect drove out of Oklahoma City limits where several other agencies became involved in the pursuit. The suspect ultimately crashed in Kingfisher County near Highway 33 and N2960 Rd. He was pronounced deceased on scene.
Several agencies were involved in this incident to include Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office, Logan County Sheriff's Office, Guthrie Police Department, Crescent Police Department, Cashion Police Department.
