2020 PROTEST/CIVIL DISTURBANCE SUMMARY AND REVIEW
In late May of 2020, protests and civil unrest erupted in Oklahoma City and numerous other cities across the country after video surfaced of George Floyd’s arrest and subsequent death while in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
We are releasing a presentation that is an overview of the encounters between Oklahoma City police officers and some of the citizens involved in the protests in our city. This was presented to City leadership summarizing the events of May 30th and May 31st.
It is important to note that many of the encounters were peaceful. But at times the protests evolved into needless and senseless violence toward police officers and innocent business owners in the downtown Oklahoma City area.
This presentation has taken months to prepare as supervisors have had to view countless hours of body worn camera video and complete use-of-force investigations regarding the protests and unrest. Just this month the presentation was presented to the Citizens Advisory Board for review.
The presentation is uploaded to the Oklahoma City Police Department’s YouTube page and can be accessed here.
Our City’s Chief of Police Wade Gourley currently sits on a working group with the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) to review responses to protests and best practices for law enforcement. According to their website, the MCCA “is a professional organization of police executives representing the largest cities in the United States and Canada.” You can read more about the MCCA by visiting their website.
We also want to say thank you to our citizens for the overwhelming support we received from the community during the protests and civil unrest.
