July 2025

Quick tips graphic

Stay hydrated! July's heat can dry you out fast, so drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you're outdoors. Aim for 8-10 glasses daily, more if you're active. Be mindful of sugary drinks and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.

Ready for Lasting Change?

Making lifestyle changes is an ongoing process. It takes time to stick to new habits and avoid slipping back into old ones. That's where SoonerCare comes in. SoonerCare offers a nutritional benefit that includes six hours of advice from a nutrition expert. It can help you lose weight and succeed in managing chronic diseases better. Ask your doctor if you qualify for this benefit and ask for a referral.

Expanded Hospice Coverage for Members

SoonerCare hospice benefits have expanded. A new law (House Bill 3980) now allows more members to receive hospice care if they qualify.

Before, hospice services were limited to children, expansion adults and members with both Medicare and Medicaid (dual eligibles). Now, coverage is available to all SoonerCare members who meet hospice criteria and fall within eligible coverage groups. The same care guidelines and payment rules will apply to the newly eligible groups. If you think you or a loved one may qualify for hospice care, talk to your provider.

Good Dental Health Can Help Protect Your Heart

Poor dental hygiene can lead to gum disease, which allows harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream. This can trigger inflammation and add to cardiovascular issues, including heart disease and elevated blood pressure. It could increase your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

  • Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to remove plaque-forming bacteria.
  • Eat a healthy diet rich in essential nutrients and reduce intake of refined carbohydrates like added sugars and processed grain foods.
  • Avoid smoking and tobacco use, such as dipping and chewing tobacco, cigarettes, vaping or hookah. If you need help quitting, call 1-800-QUIT NOW or visit OKhelpline.com.

Skip the Hold: Get a Callback

Your time is valuable. Use the SoonerCare helpline callback feature to save time and not wait on hold. When you select the callback option, your call will be returned in the order it was received. Be sure spam blocking is disabled on your phone. Also, note that the incoming call might display a Colorado or Florida number.

SoonerCare offers a benefit that can help you quit tobacco. There is also a benefit to help manage your diabetes. You'll learn how to eat healthy, check your levels, solve problems and reduce risks. Ask your doctor for a referral today.

A Healthy Pregnancy Starts with Prenatal Vitamins

SoonerCare covers dozens of prenatal vitamins at no cost for female members of childbearing age. These do not go toward your monthly count. Here are some of the most important vitamins and minerals during and after pregnancy.

  • 1-3 months: Folic acid, choline and vitamins A, C, B6 and B12
  • 4-6 months: Iron and vitamins A and C
  • 7-9 months: Calcium, DHA, iron and vitamins A, C, D, and B12
  • After birth: Folic acid, calcium, DHA, choline and vitamins A, D, B6, and B12

Prenatal vitamins prevent birth defects, especially in the brain and spinal cord. They build strong bones, teeth, eyes and skin. They help your baby’s developing blood cells. They may even help you have less morning sickness and more energy.

For questions about pharmacy coverage of prenatal vitamins, call the Pharmacy Help Desk at 405-522-6205, option 4, or toll-free at 800-522-0114, option 4.
