Spring is a great time to enjoy the fresh air and get moving! Regular physical activity is good for heart health, mental well-being and weight control. It can lower blood pressure, increase vitamin D levels and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Men and Tobacco: It's Time to Talk

Men are more likely to use tobacco than women, and the consequences are serious. Smoking leads to disease and disability, and it harms nearly every organ in the body. June is Men’s Health Month, and it's the perfect time to talk to your provider about ways that you can quit tobacco for good. Learn more about SoonerCare’s tobacco cessation benefit.

New Care Coordination Portal

If you're a member in active care coordination, a new resource is now available. The Care Coordination Member Portal gives you access to secure messaging, lab data, chart information, medical history, list of caregivers, health tools, provider locator and much more. Ask your care coordinator for details and access.

Heartburn Help

Photo of a man experiencing heartburn

Summertime means friends, family and cookouts. But sometimes all that celebrating leads to heartburn. If you feel heartburn several times a week, you might have gastroesophageal reflux disease. To help prevent heartburn, avoid spicy, salty, fried and fatty foods. Also, avoid drinks that have alcohol, caffeine, carbonated water and soda. And it's one more reason to stop smoking.

It can be hard to tell the difference between heartburn and a heart attack. If you have any of these symptoms, get medical care immediately: Pain in the chest, arm, neck or jaw; trouble breathing; breaking out in a cold sweat; nausea or vomiting; lightheadedness; dizziness; unusual fatigue; anxiety; or pressure, squeezing or fullness in your chest.

SoonerCare covers several heartburn medications. Talk to your health care provider if you’re thinking about starting or stopping heartburn medication. For questions about pharmacy coverage of heartburn drugs, call the Pharmacy Help Desk at 405-522-6205, option 4, or toll-free at 800-522-0114, option 4.

Getting Started with Baby's Oral Health

Photo of a smiling baby

Wondering how soon to start taking care of your baby’s oral health? It’s never too soon!

Clean your baby’s gums to remove sugars from liquids or food. Use a clean, damp washcloth to wipe the gums. Wiping out your baby’s mouth with a clean, wet cloth after nursing or bottle feeding helps ensure good oral hygiene and a strong foundation for your baby’s oral health.

Start brushing your child's teeth as soon as their first tooth shows. This usually happens around 6 to 10 months. When the first tooth comes in (or no later than their first birthday), take them to the dentist. Ask the dentist to show you the best way to brush and floss.

Brush after their first and last meal of the day. Use a baby toothbrush with soft bristles and a small head. Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice and brush all sides of your childʼs teeth.

Be sure the toothpaste contains fluoride, which helps prevent cavities. Using fluoride toothpaste is important, no matter where you live. It may be especially important in rural areas, where community water often does not contain fluoride.

Donate Your Unused Medical Equipment

Do you have gently used durable medical equipment that you're no longer using? Return it or donate it to Oklahoma ABLE Tech's Device Reutilization Program. Complete the form to schedule a drop-off or pick-up. The greatest needs are blood pressure monitors, grab bars, lift chairs, shower chairs and wheelchairs. Equipment goes to Oklahomans, with priority given to SoonerCare members.
