Measles in Oklahoma

Measles is a very infectious and serious disease. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a red blotchy rash. The rash starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

The State Department of Health is posting information about measles cases in the state as they are identified. As of May 9, there are 17 confirmed or probable measles cases in Oklahoma.

Measles can be prevented by the measles vaccine (usually given in combination with rubella and mumps vaccines). The vaccine is often called the MMR vaccine. It is recommended for all children ages 12-15 months and again at 4-6 years of age. If a person has not received a second dose of the vaccine between ages 4 and 6, it may be given at any age thereafter. The two doses of vaccine normally provide lifelong immunity.

Healthy Dental Habits

Maintaining healthy dental habits is crucial for preventing cavities and gum disease and ensuring overall well-being.

  • Healthy Diet A healthy diet leads to a healthier mouth. Eat less sweet and sticky foods. Eat more fruits and vegetables to help fight cavities.
  • Dental Hygiene Ask your dentist to show you the best way to brush and floss. Do this at your regular checkup.
  • Dental Checkups SoonerCare pays for many dental services. This includes checkups, fluoride treatments, X-rays and more. We recommend that a child have a first dental checkup by their first birthday.
  • Dental Emergencies We all want our kids to be free of pain. That is why SoonerCare pays for emergency exams. We also pay to pull bad teeth when needed to stop pain or infection.

ABLE Tech and SoonerStart

Stetson sits in his Zippie stroller. The seat is partially reclined and raised into a supportive position.

Stetson has a seizure disorder and developmental delays. He receives SoonerStart services. Stetson’s mom wanted a stroller that would raise her son higher. The Oklahoma ABLE Tech Device Reutilization Program was able to help.

They provided a special stroller that was able to meet his support needs. The stroller is called a Zippie. It has features like a folding frame and adjustable seating and positioning. It also has adjustable head and body supports. Plus, it includes straps to keep Stetson secure.

The seat can face Stetson's mom, or he can face out. It's the perfect stroller that allows for adjustments as Stetson grows. His mom is thrilled, and they use the stroller all the time. It's made it easier for Stetson to get around and is easier on his mom, too.

Thanks to a partnership with SoonerStart, Oklahoma ABLE Tech is helping kids live more independently. Learn more about the equipment available on the ABLE Tech website.
