SoonerCare Member Memo

March 2023

Renewals Are Coming Back

Oklahoma, like all other states, has restarted Medicaid (SoonerCare) eligibility reviews. If you received a purple letter, it is important you respond to all requested information from SoonerCare. The letter has information on how to find new health care coverage. This flyer may also be helpful, you can view it in English or Spanish.

Ineligible members will be disenrolled from SoonerCare over a nine-month period. If you are ineligible, you were mailed a letter with your coverage end date. You will also receive a letter 45 days before your end date, and a last letter 10 days before your coverage ends.

Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) will disenroll ineligible members who enrolled through OKDHS over a period of 12 months. This will only affect members who are no longer eligible to receive SoonerCare coverage.

It is very important to make sure SoonerCare has the right mailing address, email address and phone number for you so we can reach you with important information about your SoonerCare benefits. If you receive a letter or email from the Oklahoma Health Care Authority saying there is missing information from you, please respond right away by updating your account at MySoonerCare.org or call the SoonerCare Helpline at 800-987-7767.

March is National Nutrition Month

This is National Nutrition Month. Do you need help and encouragement to lose weight and manage chronic diseases better? SoonerCare has a nutrition benefit you may qualify for that includes up to six hours of advice from an expert. SoonerCare also has a diabetes education benefit (see article below) that can help you understand what your body needs to stay healthy, lower your A1c level (an indicator of diabetes or prediabetes) and avoid complications. Get your diet on track during National Nutrition Month — ask your doctor for a referral today to nutrition therapy or diabetes support services.

Free Diabetes Education Training

If you have diabetes, SoonerCare is here to help! You can get 10 hours of free training — called Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) — during the first year. After that, you get two hours each year. Some training is one-on-one, and some is in groups.

During the training, you will learn how to better manage your diabetes, get more active and eat better. After the training, most people live healthier and have fewer hospital visits and a lower risk of kidney, nerve and eye damage.

Ask your doctor about a covered DSMES program. Also ask about getting a 90-day supply of drugs for diabetes. You may also be eligible for a glucose monitor. SoonerCare has many tools to help you live better with diabetes! Click here to learn more about DSMES.

Smoking Affects Your Lungs and Your Home

If you have smoked within the past 15 years or are a current smoker, it is recommended that you have a lung cancer screening every year. Screenings can reduce the risk of death from lung cancer by 20%. If you're between the ages of 50 and 80 and have smoked a pack or more a day, contact your SoonerCare doctor to find out if a screening is right for you.

Smoking harms not only your lungs but your home. Smoke sticks to things like furniture, fabric and even pet fur. When you stop smoking, your home will be healthier and smoke-free. Need help quitting? Ask your doctor about nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to reduce cravings. There is no cost or copay for NRT, and it is not included in the monthly prescription limit. Talk to your doctor about a prescription and become smoke-free for 2023!

Visit the SoonerQuit website for more tips and resources for quitting smoking or call the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline at 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669).

Low-Dose Aspirin for At-Risk Pregnant Women

SoonerCare now covers low-dose aspirin for pregnant women who are at high risk of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious health condition that is marked by high blood pressure and signs of damage to organs like the kidneys and liver. It affects one in five pregnancies beyond 20 weeks in the United States. Ask your SoonerCare doctor if you might be at risk and if low-dose aspirin is right for you.

Member Survey Coming Soon

OHCA is working to improve your SoonerCare member experience. To make it the best it can be, we will be mailing surveys to a random sample of members. The survey covers topics such as adult health, child health, behavioral health and dental services.

Thank you

If you receive a survey, there will be a link and phone number provided so you can choose to complete the survey online or by phone. The survey will be available in English and in Spanish and takes only takes a few minutes to complete. Please help us by completing your survey so we can work to better improve your member experience. Thank you!

Hepatitis C Drug Coverage

SoonerCare’s preferred drug to treat hepatitis C is MAVYRET. It is available without prior authorization but does count toward your monthly prescription limit. If you are already taking a different hepatitis C drug, you can keep taking your current drug.

MAVYRET treats most types of hepatitis C, usually in 8 weeks. Some people may need 12 or 16 weeks of treatment. Talk to your doctor to see if you are at risk of getting hepatitis C. They can help you decide if you need to be tested and if you need to be treated with MAVYRET. If you are treated with MAVYRET or another hepatitis C drug, it is very important to remember to take it every day. Doses must not be skipped.

Call the SoonerCare Pharmacy Help Desk at 405-522-6205, option 4, or 800-522-0114, option 4, if you have questions about a particular drug or if you have other pharmacy questions.
