Travel Reimbursement Rate for 2019

The mileage reimbursement rate under the Ethics Rules for 2019 is $0.50 per mile.  This is a rate increase from $0.47 per mile in 2017 and 2018. The rate change will affect the mileage reimbursements for travel on or after January 1, 2019.

Under the Ethics Rules, candidates, as well as candidate committee officers and staff, who use their personal vehicles for campaign activities may use personal funds for gas and then be reimbursed mileage from campaign funds at the rate listed in the State Travel Reimbursement Act.  Additionally, officeholders may reimburse themselves from candidate committee funds for travel related to the elected office they hold during their term of office so long as the travel as not been reimbursed or paid for by the state.

Tip: Committees may, but are not required to, reimburse for campaign or officeholder travel.  However, any committee that does reimburse for mileage should have a procedure in place to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement and reporting for mileage.  Such procedures should ensure the committee treasurer has the information necessary to support the reimbursement reported to the Commission such as dates of travel, reason for travel, location of travel, related receipts (for parking or tolls) and miles traveled.

If you have questions about what campaign or officeholder activity entails, please refer to the Guide for Candidates (State Office)and/or contact the Ethics Commission staff at (405) 521-3451 or ethic@ethics.ok.gov.
