There were nearly 40 items on the agendas of the Broken Arrow City Council, the Broken Arrow Municipal Authority, and the Broken Arrow Economic Development Authority on Jan. 7, 2025. Here is a brief recap of the meeting topics.
A special meeting of the Broken Arrow City Council was held at 5 p.m. to consider a rezoning request for a portion of the Gatesway Foundation campus on College Street that would add a multi-family workforce development component to the site with a maximum of 108 dwelling units.
The Council heard from Gatesway representatives, the developer, and several residents from the area before approving the request. For more details, you may watch the special meeting here.
At its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m., the Council approved the authorization for a federally funded $441,085 Community Development Block Grant contract with Tulsa County. This year's allocation increased by $34,860 over the previous year. The City’s Homeowner Emergency Repair Assistance Program will receive $50,000 of the funding and the College Addition Street Rehabilitation project will receive the other $391,085.38 from the grant. The City Council also awarded a Certificate of Recognition to Robert and Lori Slankard for their participation in the "Great Christmas Light Fight" competition and representing Broken Arrow in a positive light. In addition to drawing national attention to the community, the Slankards also benefited Broken Arrow Neighbors with canned foods and cash donations from visitors to their Christmas display.
The Council authorized an agreement with the City of Coweta for mutual aid assistance in various areas of unincorporated Wagoner County where the Broken Arrow Fire Department response units may be closer than the Coweta Fire Department or vice versa. The coordination ensures that the citizens who live outside both Broken Arrow and Coweta city limits receive the best possible response in emergency situations. Broken Arrow has also agreed to provide backfill capability when Coweta resources are depleted for an extended period due to one or more incidents. Through this agreement, the City of Coweta agrees to pay Broken Arrow $2,500 per month through Dec. 31, 2025, in a pilot program to evaluate the service demand and benefit to both cities. The agreement now goes to the Oklahoma Attorney General for approval of the fee paid for services. Read more about the mutual aid agreement here.
