Elam Park Phase I will include a new destination playground, restroom facilities, a tree grove, enhancements to an existing retention pond, a parking lot, and a driveway.
The City of Broken Arrow is making significant moves toward making Elam Park a reality in the southwest corner of the City, near Aspen Avenue and Florence Street.
A $4.3 million contract was awarded to Voy Construction to begin construction on Elam Park Phase l.
Broken Arrow Parks and Recreation Director Matt Hendren is excited about bringing a park of this magnitude to the City.
“Phase l, with the adaptive playground, will be unique to Broken Arrow,” Hendren said. “There’s nothing like that anywhere around the area.”

City employees receive commendations for exemplary service for saving a customer in distress on March 14. From left—Councilor Johnnie Parks, Councilor Lisa Ford, Joshua Medrano, Gavin Drill, Damichael Roseborough, Mayor Debra Wimpee, Councilor Scott Eudey, Vice Mayor Christi Gillespie, and Rep. Ross Ford.
Three City of Broken Arrow Solid Waste and Recycling employees—Gavin Drill, Damichael Roseborough, and Joshua Medrano, received a standing ovation from the City Council and all those in attendance at the meeting on April 4.
While making their rounds on March 14, the gentlemen found Ms. Donna Darling, 78, needing assistance after nearly collapsing while taking her trash to the curb.
Drill took the time to help Darling from her driveway where she could not catch her breath back into her house and safely to her oxygen. Read the full story here and watch the video.
“What a difference when you go above and beyond and make a difference in someone else’s life,” Mayor Debra Wimpee said. “I appreciate you guys so much.”
The men received certificates of recognition from the Mayor and the City Council and a citation from Rep. Ross Ford and the Oklahoma House of Representatives for their effort.
“Donna Darling used to volunteer at the Broken Arrow Police Department for many years and thousands of hours,” Councilor Lisa Ford said. “She’s a dear friend, and it means so much that you all took the time to care for her. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
The late J. David Nunneley's grandsons unveiled the Korean War Memorial statue at the dedication held on March 21.
It's spring in Broken Arrow and we have a number of projects underway around the city. Here's a glimpse at what's going on around BA!
The beautiful Korean War Memorial has now been dedicated at Veterans Park. The late J. David Nunnely’s 800-pound bronze statue of an American soldier is a tribute to the more than 1,780,000 Americans who served in the war from 1950-1953.
Over 250 people came out in the cold to be a part of the memorial’s unveiling on March 21. Be sure to stop by Veterans Park,1111 S. Main St., and view the new monument, as well as the other notable memorials in the park that pay tribute to our war heroes.
A new widening project is beginning over at 37th Street, from Houston to Kenosha Streets. Plans include the widening of 37th Street from two to three lanes— with curb, gutter, an improved drainage system, and the addition of ADA-compliant sidewalks.
On the New Orleans Square Intersection improvements, crews installed the new concrete center of the intersection, complete with the beautiful blue medallion and the white banding. And for the safety of the construction crews, the outside lanes are closed once again. Work has resumed on the outside curbs, which includes adding the irrigation system, pavers, street lighting, and underground electrical lines. They have also started installing the entry plaza monuments. Final asphalt work is scheduled for late April. For more information, go to New Orleans Square.
The east New Orleans Street widening project near Events Park is now finished. The roadway, trails, and site grading are now complete, and the sod is in place. This fall, Wagoner County will continue improving New Orleans Street from 215th Street to 241st East Avenues. For more information, go to Broken Arrow in Motion Take 5.
At the Aspen Ridge Development, the storm sewer system installation is complete, and the contractor is moving into the mass grading portion on the grounds. Over the next 20 days, the contractor will finish backfilling soil to prepare for the businesses coming to Aspen Ridge.
A widening project is getting ready to begin on Albany Street, between 9th Street and 23rd Street, on April 10. This project will widen West Albany Street to five lanes from Lynn Lane to County Line Road.
It includes new curbs and gutters, improvements to the intersection, and new sidewalks on both sides of Albany Street. Please note that left turns will not be permitted at the intersection of 23rd and Albany Streets once the project begins. For more information, go to Albany Street Widening Project.
For additional project updates, watch Broken Arrow in Motion with City Manager Michael Spurgeon.
Did you know you can save more than 700 gallons of water per year by reducing your shower time by one minute? Turning off the faucet when you're brushing your teeth can save three to four gallons of water.
Those are a couple of ways you can be "water wise."
Please join us in participating in the 2023 Wyland National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation. Between now and April 30th, go to mywaterpledge.com and take the conservation pledge.
With your pledge, you have the chance to win prizes, lower your utility bill costs through conservation, and help our city compete against others across the U.S.
But most importantly, you're doing your part to use only what you need of one of our most valuable resources.
Here are some tips for conserving water outside, in the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room.
Take the pledge today and begin conserving water now! Don't forget to share your pledge contributions with your friends. Thank you, Broken Arrow!
