Streets and Stormwater Director Rocky Henkel recently spoke at the 2022 American Public Works and Oklahoma Water Environment Association Joint Technical Conference and Trade Show in Tulsa.
The collected wisdom and reputation of the City's Operation Division are setting standards for municipalities across the country, as evidenced by the number of department leaders elected to positions and those asked to make presentations at national and state conferences this spring.
Environmental Project Engineer Emily Rowland was elected to a four-year term as the Vice-President of the Oklahoma Water Environment Association in early May.
"I am very excited about taking on this role in the organization and getting to know the other members from all over the state," Rowland said. "It is such a great opportunity to be around so many experienced engineers and other water/wastewater professionals early in my career!"
Assistant City Manager Kenny Schwab, Streets and Stormwater Director Rocky Henkel, Transportation Division Manager Travis Small, and Environmental Division Manager Brandy Parks all made presentations at the 2022 American Public Works (APWA) and Oklahoma Water Environment Association (OWEA) Joint Technical Conference and Trade Show in Tulsa. Schwab and Henkel discussed the Washington Street Widening Project and how the City creatively overcame significant project delays.
Small's presentation centered on Phase 1 of the Albany Street Improvement Project. In this phase, City of Broken Arrow engineers and public works professionals collaborated with engineering consultants and private contractors to install a prefabricated bridge. They completed a three-year project in 15 months.
Parks discussed a joint plan with the City of Tulsa to turn the Haikey Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant's biosolids into useable Grade A compost.
Utilities Director Charles Vokes spoke at the Arkansas Water Works and Water Environment Association conference in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and talked about the City's Water Quality Distribution System Toolbox.
And Director of Solid Waste and Recycling Jerry Schuber spoke at the Oklahoma Indian Nations Solid Waste Association of North America about building resilience during labor shortages. Schuber outlined common experiences around the solid waste industry that impact recruitment, specifically for waste collection drivers. He is also quoted on this subject in an article for Routeware.com.
Led by Schwab, the Operations Division is made up of eight department directors—Engineering/Construction Ethan Edwards, Community Development Larry Curtis, Utilities Charles Vokes, Parks/Recreation Matt Hendren, Maintenance Services Ryan Baze, Solid Waste/Recycling Jerry Schuber, Emergency Management Jamie Ott, and Streets/Stormwater Rocky Henkel.
We are proud of the difference these leaders are making in Broken Arrow and beyond our City limits.
