Take the First Step to Becoming a Certified Motorcycle Instructor.
You’re Invited to Attend an Upcoming Open House Event to Learn More.
Motorcycle Ohio, in collaboration with our training sites, is hosting three free open house events to provide more information about becoming an instructor. If you haven’t completed a Basic Riding Skills class in the past three years, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a Skill Evaluation. This evaluation allows our trainers to assess your skills before enrolling in the Instructor Prep Course. The open house events are divided into two parts:
Instructor Information Session:
This session will give you an overview of the physical and mental demands of teaching, details about the Instructor Prep Course, the time and financial commitments involved, the minimum qualifications required, and what is necessary to maintain your certification once earned. You’ll also have a chance to ask questions and hear from recent graduates about their experiences.
Virtual information sessions are available: to enroll, please email Motorcycle Ohio at mogen@dps.ohio.gov with the subject line “Motorcycle Instructor Video”.
Skill Evaluation on the Training Range:
After the information session, you’ll perform the same Skill Evaluation used at the end of our Basic Riding courses. Using your own safety gear and our motorcycles, you will go through the exercises and be graded by certified instructors. We’re looking for riders who score 8 or fewer points in this evaluation.
While attendance at the open house is not mandatory, riders who participate in a Basic Riding Skills class or Skill Evaluation, along with attending an information session (either in-person or virtually), will be considered Tier 1 candidates for future prep classes.
Riders completing the information session via the web, but unable to attend a Skill Evaluation, will be directed to take a Basic Riding Skills class at their convenience.

Locations for the 2025 Instructor Prep Course:
Motorcycle Ohio's 2025 Instructor Prep Courses will be held in Zanesville, Kirtland/Mentor, and Lima. The dates and times will be confirmed later, and the locations may change. Registration details will be sent out this fall. We highly encourage you to complete a Basic Riding Skills Course or attend an Instructor Information Session prior to registration.
Limited spots are available for the Instructor Prep Course. Participants are responsible for paying a $100 class fee, and 90+ hours of study. You will also be responsible for your own travel expenses and any additional requirements (e.g., BCI background check, CPR/First Aid certification, and physical exam). Once certified, you will be paid to teach either as an independent contractor or employee at the hiring sites.
Please feel free to reach out via e-mail with any questions:mogen@dps.ohio.gov.
Do You Know Someone Who was "Saved by the Helmet"?
Motorcycle Ohio honors riders throughout the year who survive serious crashes while wearing a helmet. Riders receive a certificate of recognition and a new replacement helmet. State law does not require adults to wear a helmet, but Motorcycle Ohio hopes that acknowledging riders who wear protective gear will help to promote and increase awareness of the life-saving value of motorcycle helmets.
Regardless of the circumstances surrounding a crash, a person is more likely to survive while wearing a DOT-compliant helmet. Eligible "Saved by the Helmet" candidates must:
- Be nominated within a year of their crash
- Must not be cited for serious offenses like driving under the influence, reckless operation, or those who survived when another individual was killed.
- Be an Ohio resident holding a valid endorsement or permit at the time of the crash.
Do you know someone who deserves this recognition? Submit a nomination online at this link.
