School Resource Officer Virtual Training Academy
In partnership with the Ohio School Resource Officer Association (OSROA), the Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) is excited to announce a virtual continuing education academy for school resource officers (SROs).
As a result of stakeholder requests and input as well as collaboration with Steve Burgess, Executive Director of OSROA, the OSSC began a partnership with the University of Cincinnati and other partners with the goal of creating courses for SROs that help better train them for working in school environments.
"When we conduct events, we are often asked by school resource officers for more training on interactions with youth and mental health. Previously there was not an infrastructure to provide these courses and especially not for free and on-demand so they don't have to take time away from students," said OSSC Executive Director Emily Torok. "They want to be better role models and supports for their students and staff and we are excited to partner in that endeavor."
"As the Executive Director of OSROA, we are proud to be a partner with the OSSC in providing resources and training in school safety. OSROA and the OSSC from day one committed to each other that this journey was about the safety of our schools and to share in the mission to get it done. As OSROA continues to focus primarily on SRO training, the OSSC brings in a larger spectrum of training opportunities to an array of school personnel, including enhancing training for SROs," said Burgess. "I feel Ohio has established itself as a leader in school safety and I know both organizations will continue to strive to make Ohio schools a safer place to learn and a place to enjoy the K-12 experience."
