School is back in session and the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) has programs in place to help all Ohio kids succeed. Comprehensive health coverage for eligible children helps them stay healthy and ready to learn. From routine check-ups and vaccinations to dental care and mental health services, Ohio Medicaid ensures that children are well-prepared for the academic challenges ahead.
New routines, academic pressures, and social dynamics – back to school can be a stressful time for kids and parents. If those anxieties grow into an overwhelming mental, emotional, or behavioral episode, there is help out there.
ODM along with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) recently announced the statewide expansion of Mobile Response and Stabilization Services (MRSS). Through this free service, a team of trained professionals will respond within 60 minutes of being called to a young person’s home, school, or any other location in the community. Teachers, parents, or anyone can call or text 988 for help.
For more about this service and who can get help, visit the MRSS website.

Healthy kids are less likely to miss school, they’re more focused making it easier to learn, and have an easier time interacting with other children. ODM works with the Ohio Department of Education (DEW) and Workforce to address barriers that could keep kids from reaching their potential.
The Healthy Student Profiles describe healthcare interactions, health conditions, and educational indicators for Medicaid-participating students. The profiles are a data resource for educators, community health partners, and other stakeholders who fill a role in helping students overcome obstacles to learning. You can see the most recent findings here.
Start the school year off strong and take the Attendance Pledge and commit to showing up to learn every day!
September is Attendance Awareness Month, a nationwide recognition of the connection between regular school attendance and academic achievement. Student success starts with school attendance. Students who are absent from school miss important learning opportunities, which can be difficult, or even impossible, to make up. Research shows that missing just two days a month can leave kids trailing on foundational learning and social skills.

Taking part in Medicaid’s annual open enrollment allows you to consider your health as well as your family’s and make sure you’re getting the coverage you need and want.
Ohio Medicaid managed care plans all cover basic health services like medical, vision, dental, and mental health care, as required by federal and state rules. But each plan also offers extra benefits—like free rides to appointments, pregnancy support, or rewards for healthy habits—to stand out. Choosing the right plan can be confusing, so we created the Managed Care Health Plan Comparison Guide. It’s a simple tool that helps you compare:
-
How each plan communicates with you
-
Helpful services like flexible appointments, wellness reminders, and support for your health goals
-
Extra efforts some plans make to help you manage or prevent conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure
You can choose a plan at any time until the end of open enrollment on November 30. Simply visit www.ohiomh.com or contact the Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline at 800-324-8680 (TTY). Representatives are available Monday through Friday 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Eastern time.
