Next Generation MyCare Area Agencies on Aging Update

April 4, 2025

The Next Generation MyCare Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) Update is a short, periodic email update on the progress of the Next Generation MyCare program for those who serve MyCare Ohio members.

ODM MyCare Team Spotlight

Steven Alexander

Name: Steven Alexander

Title: Section Chief, Integrated Care Policy

What is your role in the Next Generation MyCare program? We call the Integrated Care Policy team "small but mighty." Since we are focused on combining Medicare and Medicaid, we could be involved in any program from waiver services, nursing facility, pharmacy, behavioral health, population health, etc. It could really be anything depending on the day. Lately, most of my time has been spent working on MyCare enrollment and the MyCare waiver.

What are you most excited about for the Next Generation MyCare program? I'm honestly most excited about the simpler things of MyCare like having consistent plans available statewide to make things easier for members when they move.

What is something everyone should know about you? I really enjoyed theatre, humanities, and English literature in school. For the few interested, I'm always able to rattle off a quote from a poem or Shakespeare. As I've talked with advocates and stakeholders, this Tennyson quote has continually popped into my head while looking for ways to improve care for dual eligible Ohioans:

Though much is taken, much abides; and though

We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,

One equal temper of heroic hearts,

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Next Generation MyCare Area Agencies on Aging Update

The Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) is excited about the implementation of the Next Generation MyCare program in January 2026 and subsequent rollout of the program to all 88 counties in Ohio. The MyCare Ohio program integrates both Medicaid and Medicare benefits into one program, coordinated by a managed care plan. Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) may provide care coordination or waiver service coordination to MyCare members.

ODM’s partnership with the AAAs is important to help shape the Next Generation MyCare into a program that provides our members with the best healthcare experience possible. To do this, ODM will continue to provide updates and information through the following channels:

Newspaper

Next Generation MyCare Area Agencies on Aging Update Newsletter (this newsletter) provides program updates and share upcoming activities and milestones related to AAA implementation activities.

Computer

Presentations and trainings on topics that support AAAs to prepare for the Next Generation MyCare such as system updates, care coordination, and AAA implementation activities.

People sitting

Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging (O4A) meetings to share information between O4A/AAAs and ODM around AAA implementation activities.

Thank You for Attending our Next Generation MyCare AAA Academy Part 1 and 2 Sessions

Thank you for attending the Next Generation MyCare Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) Academy Part 1 and 2 sessions. These webinars provided critical information on upcoming changes with the Next Generation MyCare program that pertain to AAAs. The following outlines at a high level what was covered in the two parts. The presentation from each session has been shared with attendees from each organization.

  • Part 1: Provided an overview of the Next Generation MyCare program and shared about how will receive communication from ODM leading up to the roll out.
  • Part 2: Provided details on care coordination including introducing ODM’s care coordination oversight team, going over the care coordination inquiry and incident management processes, and reviewing the AAA role in care coordination.

The Next Generation MyCare AAA Academy Part 3 session, originally scheduled for March 27 and 28 has been postponed at this time. ODM’s partnership with the AAAs is important to help shape the Next Generation MyCare. ODM is taking additional time to address questions raised by O4A and AAAs about the implementation checklist and timelines. This session will be rescheduled in the future to share information about the implementation checklist and the activities AAAs must complete in preparation for the implementation of the Next Generation MyCare program.
