As of May 2, the Ohio Children’s Initiative Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) Information Technology (IT) System is available for all certified Ohio Children’s Initiative CANS assessors to begin conducting CANS assessments with children/youth. The new OhioRISE program will use the Ohio Children’s Initiative CANS tool to establish eligibility and to inform care planning and decision-making for children and adolescents with behavioral health needs. Certified Ohio Children’s Initiative CANS assessors are expected to use the CANS IT System to gather all information about the child/youth and family story to describe their strengths and needs.
There are actions that you must take in order to use the CANS IT System to conduct CANS assessments with children/youth and to bill Medicaid for CANS assessments beginning July 1, 2022.

In February, ODM launched the OhioRISE community and provider training in partnership with Aetna Better Health of Ohio, the Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Center of Excellence (COE), state agencies, and OhioRISE stakeholders. Since then, ODM has delivered five trainings for community partners and providers to help them prepare for implementing the OhioRISE program in July.
If you plan to deliver OhioRISE services and supports to OhioRISE-enrolled youth and their families starting July 1, and you were unable to attend any of the OhioRISE trainings that ODM has delivered live this year, we encourage you to watch the recording(s) linked below.

OhioRISE’s care management entities (CMEs) were launched in February and will serve as the go-to providers delivering wraparound care coordination for children and youth with complex behavioral health needs enrolled in OhioRISE. CMEs will also help ground and grow their communities’ system of care so overall resources expand to help children and youth with behavioral health needs and their families in the coming months and year. The CMEs’ focus for the July 1 go-live and beyond is ensuring that wraparound, high-intensity care is available, coordinated locally, and clinically integrated for OhioRISE-enrollees. The CMEs are therefore working to expand their relationships with local system partners as well as other child-serving systems and agencies so they can collaborate when serving children/youth and families enrolled in OhioRISE.
Children and youth who may be eligible for OhioRISE*:
- Are eligible for Ohio Medicaid (either managed care or fee-for-service),
- Are age 0-20, and
- Require significant behavioral health treatment needs, measured using the Ohio Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment.
*Children and youth may also be eligible for OhioRISE due to certain urgent conditions. For example, if a child or youth is in a hospital for behavioral health reasons.
Providers and community partners can refer children/youth to their local CME for a CANS assessment. We encourage you to get to know and partner with the OhioRISE CME serving your geographic area in Ohio so that you are prepared to help children/youth and their families be assessed for OhioRISE eligibility.
The flyers linked under the “CME Contact Information” tab on the OhioRISE Care Management Entities (CMEs) page of the OhioRISE webpage will provide you with each CME’s contact information, including their:
- Crisis line
- Website
- Contact for public inquiries
- Contact for partnership opportunities
- Contact for local public agencies
- Contact for CANS assessment referrals
- CME relationship manager contact
- Community partner contacts
If you have questions for a specific CME, please reach out to the individual listed on the corresponding CME’s flyer. Please direct your questions about the OhioRISE program to the OhioRISE mailbox.
