Explore Career Opportunities in Ohio's Insurance Industry
by Judith L. French, Director
February is Insurance Careers Month in Ohio, recognized by a resolution from Governor Mike DeWine. This recognition highlights the important role Ohio’s insurance industry plays in supporting Ohioans and providing jobs across the state, while emphasizing the industry’s growing workforce needs and diverse career opportunities.
Ohio is home to one of the largest insurance marketplaces in the world and ranks seventh nationally in total insurance employment, with thousands of insurance professionals working across the state. As the industry continues to grow and prepare for a wave of retirements, more than 100,000 new insurance workers are expected to be needed by 2031.
Insurance careers support financial security and peace of mind for individuals, families, and businesses. The Ohio insurance industry offers a wide variety of roles, providing opportunities for nearly every skill set and continued growth in technology-focused roles. Insurance careers offer competitive wages and advancement, with average salaries in Ohio approximately 50 percent higher than other private-sector positions.
The Ohio Department of Insurance is a proud partner of Insuring Ohio Futures, working alongside higher education, government, and industry leaders to strengthen insurance education, workforce recruitment, and talent development statewide. These efforts align with the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation, JobsOhio, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to maintain Ohio's position as a premier state for insurance businesses and insurance careers.
To support career exploration, the Ohio Department of Insurance offers a toolkit at insurance.ohio.gov, while OhioInsuranceCareers.org provides Ohio-specific insights, including insurance-related academic programs and current job openings, and guidance on transferable skills, certifications, education pathways, and career tracks.
During Insurance Careers Month and beyond, I encourage Ohioans to explore educational opportunities and career paths in the state’s dynamic insurance industry.

Start the Year with an Insurance Checkup
Ohioans are encouraged to make reviewing their insurance coverage a regular part of financial wellness. Comparing policies helps ensure coverage meets individual needs and can identify opportunities to reduce costs, making the start of the new year an ideal time for a review.
Homeowners can review coverage limits, deductibles, and policy endorsements, report major improvements, and remember that flood insurance is typically purchased separately. Auto insurance policies benefit from a review of deductibles, liability limits, and driving habits. Health insurance reviews should confirm in-network providers, track co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs, and compare premiums to ensure the policy aligns with individual budget and coverage needs. Life insurance policies gain value from updates after major life events, with beneficiaries confirmed and annual statements reviewed for costs and cash value.
Working with an insurance agent helps Ohioans maximize coverage and identify potential savings. Residents can also explore discounts for bundling policies, safe driving, long-term loyalty, senior status, or military service.
