Getting a CMS Non-Renewal Notice and Understanding Next Steps
In Ohio, some Medicare Advantage plans and Prescription Drug plans (Part D) will not be renewing their contracts with Medicare for 2026. Individuals affected by this will receive a Notice of Non-Renewal from the plan, stating that coverage ends on Dec. 31.
This notice reminds recipients to choose a new plan for the coming year and includes a list of options for Medicare coverage, including a special right to purchase a Medigap policy.
If a new plan is selected by Dec. 31, coverage will begin on Jan. 1. If this deadline is missed, a Special Enrollment Period of an additional 63 days is available to select a plan. If no new plan is chosen by Dec. 31, Medicare will automatically enroll the individual in Original Medicare for standard medical coverage.
For those receiving Extra Help, if the plan is terminating and no action is taken by Dec. 31, Medicare will automatically enroll the individual in a Part D plan to ensure continued coverage starting Jan. 1. This automatic enrollment guarantees uninterrupted drug coverage, although the new plan may not include the same providers, benefits, or costs. Affected individuals are also granted a Special Enrollment Period from Dec. 8 through February, during which a different plan can be selected to better meet coverage needs.
Ohioans with Medicare are encouraged to review options carefully. For help comparing plans, visit Medicare.gov, call 1-800-MEDICARE, or contact the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program at 800-686-1578.

CMS Annual Notice of Change Explains Changes to Current Plan for 2026
Ohioans with Medicare coverage enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug plan (Part D) should have received two key documents: the Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage. These materials explain any updates to plan benefits, costs, and coverage for 2026.
It is crucial that beneficiaries read these notices carefully to ensure their plan still meets their health and financial needs. Checking whether current doctors, hospitals, and other providers remain in the plan’s network is especially important, as changes could affect access to care or out-of-pocket costs.
Those who do not receive their notices should contact their plan immediately to request copies. For additional help understanding Medicare options and comparing plans, contact the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program at 800-686-1526.

OSHIIP Medicare Checkup Events: A Key Resource for Navigating Open Enrollment
The Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) is currently hosting statewide Medicare Checkup events to help Ohioans navigate Medicare Open Enrollment, which runs through Dec. 7, for 2026 coverage.
These events cover Medicare basics, plan changes, prescription drug options, and ways to save money. Most events also include plan comparisons and one-on-one counseling. Those unable to attend in person can also access OSHIIP services by joining a virtual webinar, scheduling a virtual counseling session, or calling 800-686-1578.
During this time, insurance agents can be helpful in understanding coverage options, but it is important to know what agents can and cannot do. Agents should never visit homes or senior living communities without a prior invitation, cannot claim to be OSHIIP or Medicare representatives, and cannot pressure anyone to enroll in a plan. Staying informed and cautious helps ensure safe and accurate guidance during open enrollment.
