SOAR Study Marks Year of Research into Root Causes of Mental Illness

January marked a year since the State of Ohio Adversity and Resilience (SOAR) Study launched throughout the state. With an initial $20 million grant from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, SOAR is the most inclusive mental health research effort in history and seeks to find the root causes of mental health conditions by examining a range of medical, social, and psychological factors.

Save the Date: RecoveryOhio's Mental Health Day at the Ohio State Fair is July 25

On this special day, visitors to the Ohio State Fair will find behavioral health and mental health insurance resources at state agency booths throughout the fair to help make prevention, treatment, and recovery supports more visible and accessible to all Ohioans.

Governor Mike DeWine created the RecoveryOhio initiative to address substance use disorders and mental illness by coordinating the work of state departments, boards, and commissions and investing in the health and well-being of Ohioans.

Ohio Mental Health Parity Annual Report Issued

The Ohio Department of Insurance, Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and RecoveryOhio issued the latest annual joint Ohio Mental Health Parity Report. The report details engagement activity with consumers, payers, and other stakeholders, and identifies mental health insurance access and coverage trends and barriers.

The Ohio Department of Insurance handled 3,028 complaints specific to accident and health insurance in 2024. Of those complaints, 25 were related to coverage for mental health and substance use disorder services. The Ohio Department of Insurance also received 19 requests for external review related to mental health and substance use disorder benefits.
