A New General Assembly The 136th General Assembly has officially begun, and, for the next two years, I have the honor of serving as the Speaker Pro Tempore, assisting Speaker Matt Huffman in leading the House of Representatives and the important legislative agenda that will support all Ohioans. It is a true honor to be the first female in House history to serve in this role, and I look forward to working with my House colleagues to pass sound legislation. I will also serve on the House Education, General Government, Finance, and Workforce and Higher Education committees. Government Day

I recently participated on a panel with other political leaders at Columbia High School to discuss the importance of civil service. I had the chance to discuss my long career as an Ohio Senator and State Representative and how these roles have helped shape state law. I provided insights to pathways to public service and the critical role these leaders play in shaping every Ohioan’s life. It was a true pleasure to be able to spend time with these students and answer their questions about public service and why I serve.

I made a similar stop at the eighth-grade Social Studies class at Avon Middle School where we talked about how the state legislature works in conjunction with the executive and judicial branches of government.

Lorain County Ride-A-Long

I had the opportunity to participate in a ride-a-long with the Lorain County Children Service department where I had the chance to discuss kinship care and meet with some of the selfless family members that step up to provide support to children when it is needed most. These amazing individuals spoke with me about some of the legal challenges surrounding this type of care while describing their personal perspectives and situations they have faced while providing this service. Along with these personal stories and some of the initiatives the Lorain County Children Service department has implemented, I can take this information back to Columbus and help with the development of legislation to provide support to these departments and individuals.

150 Years of Divine Service

The St. Peter Catholic Church in North Ridgeville recently celebrated 150 years of service to the community as a parish. This recognition came just two years after celebrating 100 years as an iconic church in the city. I wanted to recognize these two milestones with a resolution from the House of Representatives for their commitment to serving the Catholic community and all the support they provide to the people of North Ridgeville. St. Peter has more than 5,900 registered parishioners and 339 students enrolled in the church-run school.

AARP Grants AARP Community Challenge Grants I also want to encourage those in need to apply for AARP Community Challenge Grants. These grants are used for tangible improvement projects that can help your community become more livable for all residents, especially those 50 and older. Applications are being accepted through March 5, 2025 for grants to improve public places, housing, transportation, digital connections, and community resilience across three funding opportunities – Flagship Grants, Demonstration Grants and Capacity-Building Microgrants.
