Summer just began and already central Ohio has endured a multi-day heatwave that brought excessive heat advisories and torrid humidity. Amid the 90-plus degree days, it’s important to remember that people aren’t the only ones who suffer through the heat: our furry friends have to deal with it, too. As the licensor of our county’s dogs, I want to offer tips to help your canine family members deal with the heat so we can all enjoy the summer and the upcoming July 4 holiday.  (Some of these tips also apply to cats – though they are not required to be licensed by the Auditor’s office.)

First off, prepare for Independence Day fireworks which might spook your pet. This year Red White and Boom will be held July 3 in Downtown Columbus, and numerous other celebrations will be held in communities across Franklin County on July 4. 

If you’re going to walk your dog, do it well before or after the fireworks display.  Make sure your dog is licensed so if they do become lost or instinctively bolt because of the fireworks, they can be returned to you quickly. Dog licenses can always be purchased online at doglicense.franklincountyohio.gov or in person at the Auditor’s office License Counter, 373 S. High St., 21^st floor, Columbus.  

And while you’re on your walk with your canine best friend, remember that the pavement can get hot enough to burn a dog’s paws. Consider walking them on the grass. Make sure they have access to water, and you can also spray them down with water to cool them down.

Ensure they’re leashed and close, and if they need to be comforted, consider playing white noise for them. And of course, never leave a dog or any animal in a hot car.

Summer is a time of festivals, farmer’s markets and fun. Look for Auditor’s office staff to be out and about in our community engaging and letting everyone know about the services of your Auditor’s office. I hope everyone – dogs and humans alike - has a happy July 4^th holiday and a great summer.

Ohio Art Market wins June True Transactions Award

Ohio Art Market in Westerville won the June 2024 True Transactions Award for its flawless use of accurate scanners and scales in its sale of arts and crafts made by more than 100 Ohio-based artisans. “I want to complement all of the staff and artists from Ohio Art Market for their outstanding record of using accurate scales and scanners at their store,” Auditor Stinziano said.  

Ohio Art Market was founded in 2011 and has since grown to sell the work of more than 100 Ohio-based Artisans. It is located at 30 N. State Street in Westerville.
