List of Most Popular Dog Names, Breeds in Franklin County Revealed as One Week Remains to Purchase Dog License Without Penalty

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano released a list of the most popular dog names along with a reminder to county residents of the January 31 deadline for purchasing a dog license without penalty.

The most popular dog name of 2023 remained the same as in past years – Bella. And that doesn’t include the myriad offshoots of Bella: Bella Rose, Bella Blue, Bella Bean, Bella Lincoln and the like.

The top five dog names of 2023, as derived from dog license applications, are:

  1. Bella (1578)
  2. Lucy (1122)
  3. Max (988)
  4. Daisy (939)
  5. Charlie (900)

The top five Dog Breeds are:

  1. Mixed (20,153)
  2. Lab (including all variants) (9,149)
  3. Pit Bull (7,909)
  4. German Shephard (4,409)
  5. Golden Retriever (4,048)

In a year when Taylor Swift was named Person of the Year by Time Magazine, there were four dogs named Swift (though that could be unrelated to the singer.) All types of candy are well represented: Snickers (132), Skittles (24), Twix (15) Toffee (10), Jellybean (7), Snickerdoodle (5), and Kit Kat (4).

Ohio State-based names continue to be popular: there are 393 Brutuses, 220 Buckeyes, 196 Scarlets (and 121 Scarletts with two Ts), and one C.J. Stroud. For Blue Jackets fans, there 19 Boones and a Laine. For fans of the Championship-winning Columbus Crew, there are 15 dogs named Crew.

Dog owners can renew their dog license without penalty through the January 31 deadline. In addition to being required by state law, dog licenses ensure that if a dog is lost they are quickly returned to their owner. Licensing fees support the Franklin County Dog Shelter.

Owners can always purchase or renew a dog’s license online at https://doglicense.franklincountyohio.gov, or at the Franklin County Auditor’s office license counter, 373 S. High St., 21st Floor. Counter hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm.
