Storm-Damaged Properties Could Be Eligible For Tax Relief

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Property owners of a home or business that has been damaged by last night’s storms may be eligible to receive a reduction on their annual real estate tax bill.

Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano confirmed that state law gives County Auditors the authority to reduce real estate values for properties that have been damaged or destroyed. A substantial reduction in property value could result in lower real estate taxes for the property until it has been restored to its prior condition or value.

Property value reductions can be applied to real property, including manufactured homes.

“We want to make sure citizens who have unfortunately suffered structural damage to their property from Monday’s storms know about their options regarding potential tax relief,” said Auditor Stinziano.

The application deadline for damage occurring since January 1, 2019 is December 31, 2019 for real estate and January 31, 2020 for manufactured homes taxed apart from land.

Applications for a property value reduction and additional information are available on the Franklin County Auditor's website at www.franklincountyauditor.com/real-estate/tax-reduction-programs/damaged-destroyed-form.
