Ohio EPA Community Update, Delta, Ohio

Hello,

Ohio EPA has estimated the area most likely impacted by high lead concentrations detected in air monitoring in Delta, Ohio, resulting from demolition activities at the Bunting Bearings facility.

Ohio EPA used air quality models to estimate the highest lead emission rates during demolition in November and December at the Bunting Bearings demolition site. Using this information, the staff estimated the area most likely impacted by lead air pollution from the demolition.

Based on the modeling, the area of higher lead concentration extends less than a quarter mile (two-tenths) from the demolition site in all directions. The map shows the estimated contour line of the area for both November and December.

Ohio EPA used conservative assumptions to ensure the potential impact area was not underestimated. The model shows areas where monthly lead levels could reach 0.15 micrograms per cubic meter or higher, even though the U.S. EPA standard is based on an average of three months. This approach adds an extra level of caution.

It is important to note, the elementary, middle, and high schools are not located within the estimated area of higher concentration for lead.

Delta Estimated Area of Impact

Ohio EPA is continuing to collect air samples at the Bunting Bearings demolition site. As additional samples are collected, analyzed by the laboratory, and reported to Ohio EPA, new data will be posted to our website
