Wally Vickers Named Head Coach of Deer Park Boys’ Basketball Team
CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Deer Park Board of Education has accepted the resignation of head boys’ basketball coach Steve Gentry, Sr. due to unforeseen health circumstances.
Gentry exits the program following the teams’ run to the OHSAA quarterfinals last year, making it the program's second trip to the quarterfinals in three years, including a state championship in 2018. The 2020 tournament run was cut short due to COVID-19.
“We are extremely grateful for Coach Gentry’s contributions to the Deer Park Athletic Department,” Athletic Director Greg Huster said. “His dedication led us to the first OHSAA State Championship in any sport in more than four decades. His successes will be left eternally in the annals of Deer Park Wildcat history.”
Effective immediately, Wally Vickers will take the helm of the boys’ basketball program as the interim coach for the 2020-21 season. Coach Vickers takes over the program following a recent stint as the coach of Clark Montessori.
“We’re excited to welcome Wally into the Wildcat family,” Huster said. “Coach Vickers boasts a tremendous resume of developing quality basketball players and young men. We’re fortunate to have him aboard.”
Vickers’ name is known well throughout the Cincinnati area and the state of Ohio as a top-tier head coach and developer of basketball talent throughout the state. Vickers has run the North-South All Star game, as well as head coaching stints at Lakota East, Sycamore, Hilliard Darby and CHL-foe Indian Hill.
His longest tenure came as the head coach for Lakota East High School, where he spent 12 seasons at the helm. During his time with the Thunderhawks, Vickers led the team to a 151-117 record, a pair of Greater Miami Conference championships, and a Division I District title.
