Parents play important role in preventing bullying Dayton Daily News The theme this year for National Bullying Prevention Month is “Stomp out Bullying.” Almost daily there is a news story about a child who was bullied while other kids tape it on their phones and post online. To change the kids who record the bullying into the kids who intervene can start with just one person. According to the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio law defines bullying, harassment and intimidation as any “intentional written, verbal, graphic or physical act that a student or group of students exhibits toward another student more than once, and that behavior causes mental or physical harm to the other student; and is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive educational environment for the other student.”
Ohio House passes tax bill that would give teachers a break on school supplies Dayton Daily News Ohio lawmakers voted Thursday in favor of a bill that would give teachers a tax break when buying school supplies. Senate Bill 26 would authorize a state income tax deduction for teachers’ out-of-pocket expenses for professional development and classroom supplies. There is already a federal tax deduction for up to $250 for qualified educators. This bill would cover an additional $250 for educators in Ohio... Last week Sen. Stephanie Kunze R-Hilliard, who introduced the legislation, testified before the House Finance Committee that teachers spend an average of $600 of their own money each year on basic school supplies.
Watkins Memorial High School launches 'Warrior-Wellness Day' Newark Advocate Watkins Memorial High School recently held the first of what is intended to be more “Watkins-Warrior Wellness Days”... As a group, school officials shaped a day dedicated to providing school-wide social and emotional learning opportunities, (Assistant Principal Melissa Ladowitz) said... The special day also grew to encompass participation from a number of local agencies, including Heartbeats, the Ohio Investigative Unit, the Ohio State Bar Foundation, Brightway Center, as well as Licking County Job & Family Services, Mental Health America and Behavior Health Partners... “All of these things were designed to align with new Ohio social-emotional learning standards developed by the Ohio Department of Education,” Ladowitze said.

Tackling human trafficking through the classroom Columbus CBS-10 A central Ohio organization is on a mission to protect young girls from human trafficking. According to the Polaris Project, a nonprofit that tracks trafficking in the U.S. and abroad, nearly 400 cases of human trafficking were reported in Ohio in 2016. One in 4 of those cases involved a juvenile... The (National Trends and Services Facet for the Twin Rivers Chapter of the Links, Incorporated) began offering a human trafficking program for middle and high school girls five years ago. The 4-hour workshop is called “My Sister’s Keeper: Breaking the Chains of Human Trafficking”. Students hear unfiltered testimonies from women who were once trafficked.
Students get a chance to view ‘the final frontier’ Steubenville Herald-Star Students in Jefferson County schools will get a chance to view “the final frontier” when the Curiosity Dome returns to area schools. The Jefferson County Educational Service Center’s Quest for Success program is sponsoring the dome, a science education program based in Grand Rapids, Mich., that began in 2008 and travels to schools around the country. Students in grades preK-12 will gather inside a 15-foot-tall portable planetarium to view interactive programs narrated by celebrities. This year the dome is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Hilliard middle school students study environment at Latham Park ThisWeek Community News Once upon a time, a teenager who was seen fishing on a weekday morning was playing hooky. But students from Hilliard Heritage, Memorial and Weaver middle schools who were fishing last week at Latham Park were doing so as part of an educational program led by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and organized by Urban Park Development... About 100 honors science students from Memorial took part in activities Oct. 3 at Latham Park at Cosgray and Scioto Darby Creek roads.

The Revolutionary Impact Of Immersive Technology On Education Forbes Sir Martyn Lewis and I met back in April to discuss the impact of technology on humanity at The Club at The Ivy in London... As education is one of the key industries being disrupted by technology, and a subject both Martyn and I feel passionate about, it felt apt to put it on the agenda for the evening’s discussion. The ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ will see an increase in workforce automation. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimates that over the next 10 to 20 years, “14 percent of jobs are at high risk of being fully automated, while another 32 percent at risk of significant change”.
