DeMaria also visited Springfield City Schools’ School of Innovation and Lincoln Elementary School. Also yesterday, the U.S. Department of Education announced recipients of the 2018 Terrel H. Bell Awards for Outstanding School Leadership. Congratulations to Elizabeth Riesenberger of John Foster Dulles Elementary School in Cincinnati on being named one of 10 nationwide awardees!
Positive strides at Tecumseh Local Schools get praise from state superintendent

Superintendent Paolo DeMaria, the Ohio Department of Education’s state superintendent, visited Tecumseh Local Schools Tuesday, focused on getting an in-depth look at how the district is working to deal with issues outside of school that affect classroom performance… DeMaria said he heard about the positive things going on in the district by word of mouth and will take what he’s learned back to Columbus, where he’ll work on a way to share the approaches with similar districts in the state. He said after his visit he was impressed with not only the quantity, but the quality of the initiatives at Tecumseh’s district. “Here’s a group of people who got together who said we can do better,” DeMaria said.

The Wayne County Schools Career Center celebrated the graduation of 100 adults and community education graduates on Tuesday, Sept. 25 with a ceremony at the school. Graduates from 13 career center programs including administrative office technology, automotive technology, billing and coding specialist, dental assisting, fast track basic office operations, fast track welding, law enforcement training academy, medical office billing and coding specialist, medical assisting, phlebotomy, precision machining, robotics and automation technology, and welding technology along with the Wayne County Aspire programs celebrated their accomplishments with family, friends, and career center staff.
Valley teacher helps hurricane victims, brings home classroom lesson

Victims of Hurricane Michael are still struggling to put their lives back together. The storm came ashore just two weeks ago, and the cleanup is far from over. A Valley teacher traveled to Florida and used skills from the classroom to help families trying to rebuild. Dave Smith is usually using his saw to teach students in his construction class at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. But just over a week ago, he was using it where it was needed the most.
Lordstown schools collect items to help Florida school affected by hurricane

Over the weekend, the administration at Lordstown Schools was told that a student in third grade at Lordstown shared a story with her teacher about her friends in Florida that were affected by Hurricane Michael. According to a school representative, the student who shared the story asked if her class could write letters to the students in Florida at Springfield Elementary, which the teacher was thrilled to do. The third-grader inspired Lordstown Schools to do more and help those students, families, and teachers in need.
Clintonville 9-year-old donates American Girl dolls to comfort young cancer patients

Whenever a girl undergoing treatment for cancer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital begins to lose her hair, social worker Faye Bullio typically asks whether she would like a brand-new American Girl doll to keep her company. The dolls — which are bald — are provided to the hospital by a girl who’s as young as some of the patients receiving them. Anna Patton, 9, started Dolls for a Cause in 2016 and has donated a total of 22 American Girl dolls to Nationwide Children’s patients during the past two Christmases. This holiday season, she hopes to donate about as many.
SAT reclaims title of most widely used college admission test

The SAT has vaulted past the rival ACT to reclaim its long-held position as the nation’s most widely used college admission test, according to data provided Tuesday to The Washington Post. Nearly 2 million U.S. students in the class of 2018 took the SAT during high school, compared with 1.91 million who took the ACT. A surge in delivery of the SAT on school days helped fuel the switch.
