New Traffic Pattern Coming Soon

I-70 West into Downtown

East Side drivers headed downtown via Interstate 70 will notice a new traffic pattern just before the I-70/71 split this weekend. Friday and Saturday night, crews will shift westbound I-70 traffic to begin construction on the next phase of the Columbus Crossroads project.

I-70 west will be reduced to one lane between 18th Street and Grant Avenue until next winter so crews can reconstruct and widen I-70 east. That means I-70 west thru traffic and traffic headed to I-71 south have to merge into the left lane as they approach the 18th Street overpass.

Drivers may remember this traffic pattern from the last downtown project. Motorists are encouraged to follow the signs and choose their lane early.

New Lane Assignments

Here's how traffic will be impacted this weekend.

FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2019

  • 9 PM: I-71 south reduced to two lanes between Broad Street and I-70
  • 11 PM: I-71 south to I-70 west closed.
Detour: I-71 south to I-670 west to SR 315 south to I-71 south
  • 5 AM: All ramps and lanes of I-71 south and I-70 west open, but I-70 west is reduced to one lane between 18th St. and Grant Ave. until Winter 2020.

SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2019

  • 9 PM: Ramp from I-70 west to I-71 north reduced to one lane.
  • 11 PM: Ramp from I-70 west to I-71 north closed.
Detour: I-70 west to SR 315 north to I-670 east to I-71 north.
  • 5 AM: All lanes open, but shifted to the outside (right).

This $80 million project is the next in a series of projects to improve the I-70/71 corridor. This project will reconstruct and widen I-70 east between 4th Street and Miller Avenue and build new ramps from Fulton Ave. to I-70 east and I-70 east to Parsons Ave.
