Practitioners Encouraged to Report West Nile Virus Infections in Horses

2018 West Nile Virus Positive Horses

Jeff Hayes, DVM MS, Pathology Section Head and Erika Wrigley, Veterinary Pathology Assistant

The ADDL reports 33 horses infected with West Nile Virus so far in 2018 with date of onset ranging from 8/6/28 through 9/11/18. This is a notable increase from 24 infected horses in all of 2017.  Affected horses have been reported from the following 13 counties: Ashtabula (2), Champaign (1), Coshocton (2), Geauga (1), Holmes (9), Knox (1), Lorain (2), Medina (1), Seneca (1), Stark (1), Trumbull (2), Tuscarawas (4), and Wayne (4). Of 31 horses with known history information, 30 were not vaccinated against WNV, and the vaccine status of the 31st horse is unknown. Of these 31 horses, 17 have been reported to survive the infection, 11 were euthanized and 1 died spontaneously; the outcome of 1 horse was unknown.

Although cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) are not required to be reported to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the ADDL does encourage reporting of confirmed cases (614-728-6220). The ADDL notifies stakeholders including the United States Department of Agriculture, the Ohio Department of Health, who notifies local health departments in case insect control activities may be indicated, and the Equine Disease Communications Center (EDCC) of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Likewise, confirmed cases are reported to Arbonet of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for national reporting purposes. Veterinary practitioners are encouraged to recommend WNV vaccination for their clients’ horses, and to report positive cases to the ADDL.

Quarter Horse Congress

All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Ohio

Anne Parkinson, BS, ADDL Serology Section Head and Customer Service Coordinator

Ohio will once again host the All-American Quarter Horse Congress. This show is the largest single breed horse show in the US with more than 17,000 entries and 6,000 horses. The 2018 show will be held at the Ohio Exposition Center in Columbus Ohio, and will run from Monday, October 1st thru Sunday, October 28th. The ADDL is prepared to provide Equine Infectious Anemia Virus (EIAV) testing 7 days a week in support of this show. Samples may be dropped off to the lab from 8AM to 5PM, M-F during normal business hours. The EIAV ELISA test results are provided on the SAME day for samples received by 12 noon weekdays. Samples received after noon will be reported the following day.

To arrange weekend, holiday or after-hours testing contact Anne Parkinson, Serology Section Head, at 614-989-8036. For weekend/holiday submissions (including October 8th, Columbus Day) samples must arrive at the lab by 10 AM to receive same day results. Test costs are $5.50/sample, plus an $8.00 accession fee. For after-hours testing a $75.00 fee will be added to each accession. Cash, checks, or credit cards must accompany after-hours submissions.

To submit EIAV samples please use the Ohio Equine Infectious Anemia Test Record and include “Quarter Horse Congress” at the top of the form above the owner’s name. Serum samples for EIAV testing must be collected by a veterinarian that is licensed and accredited by the State of Ohio. Results for these submissions will be faxed to the submitting veterinarian at the Quarter Horse Congress Hall office.

If you have questions during normal business hours please contact Anne Parkinson (parkinson@agri.ohio.gov), 614-995-1495 (direct office) - or call the main lab line at 614-728-6220.
