Area Commission Planning Variance and Rezoning Training

Building and Zoning Aerial View of City

Department of Neighborhoods

As part of the Department of Neighborhoods Area Commission training series to assist commissioners with skills development and education, we invite you to attend an interactive training with our Planning Division on Wednesday, April 23, 6:00 – 8:30 PM at 111 N. Front Street, 2nd Floor Computer Lab.

The training will focus on the following topics:

  • Land Use and Zoning basics – this will lay the foundation for our training. We will send out slides that go over this material ahead of time.
  • CSIR – Planning Division’s digital mapping app. We will send out links and materials ahead of the training for participants to learn on their own time. We will take a small amount of time to go over this in the training to answer any questions, but we would like participants to have familiarity with the mapping application previous to attending the training.
  • Citywide Planning Policies (C2P2) and Area Specific Land Use Plans - these are the citywide land use policies, principals, and design guidelines that the Planning division uses to review BZA, CV, and Rezoning cases and the area specific land use plans currently in place, which may or may not use C2P2, along with the area-specific content of the plans.
  • Development Review – using a very hands-on approach, we will cover a few BZA, CV, and Rezoning cases utilizing various tools including CSIR, area plans, C2P2, while integrating discussion to help attendees understand the Planning Division’s perspective on development review. This will help attendees more fully utilize the same tools to express their Area Commission’s perspective on development review cases (which may differ from ours).

The training is open to all Area Commissioners, is first come, first serve, and limited to 15 participants.
